I am glad that Maggie May wasn't hurt. I am sure you were both terrified!

Aw this makes me sad. Not all big dogs are oversized monsters... I hope you meant it in a joking way. Big dogs are peoples babies too. Most just don't know better or were not taught better. Jackson has been around many well behaved large dogs who I know and trust but I would never take a chance around ones I don't know or ones who I saw were clearly misbehaving. I have met far many more aggressive "little monsters" than big. I will never understand why it's cute for a 10lb dog to be tugging, lunging at the end of a leash barking but if a 100lb dog is doing it... it's looked at as an evil monster. Both are either a matter of temperament problems, training issues, human issues, or a combination of all three. I for one hope to own a German Shepherd or a Mastiff one day.

I am glad that maggie may and hot rod are fine.. and you are ok too

I had a poodle attack Remy once.. so I learned my lessons. But is strange to have people say a dog over 20lbs as a danger. I have a 26 lb shih tuz who is scared of everything and is so gentle with remy it is such a joy to watch. But I guess if he had a different personality he could do damage..idk.. he is just my sweet bailey

*sigh* the thing I am learning is you just don't know with dogs. They have their ways and I agree with most posters.. even a gentle large dog can hurt our little guys.

Oh my gosh! How scary for you! I know Maggie May was so scared. I bet she was overwhelmed with relief when you got her to you. I am so glad that it turned to be ok for all involved.

Actually, I wasn't joking. I grew up with german shepherds so I'm a lover of large breed dogs as well. Still don't want them near my dogs. Sorry you disagree, but there is much we don't agree on, so whatever.

Oh I don't blame you for not wanting them around your little dogs... wasn't saying that at all. I totally get it. It's risky no doubt. I won't let Jackson off leash ever with a big dog, unless it's my grandmas 10yr old Lab... I have others in the past but haven't in over a year as it makes me too nervous now. All the big dogs that I dogsit are only w/ Jackson walking on leash together (A Rottie and a Lab that I have walked since pups, other dogs are small).

Just slightly took offense to labeling them all them big monsters (that was the part I said I hope you were joking about)... I know most people would be up in arms when people call their little dogs names such as rats etc. So I don't see why it's okay to name call big dogs. I didn't want to start a war with you, don't know why you have an attitude with me, I wasn't saying it to specifically argue with you. Just in general I find it so double standard to be able to bad mouth large breeds but if someone bashes small breeds, people flip out. I hope you're not mad at me- it wasn't anything towards you specifically... just was surprised to see you say such a thing is all, as I wouldn't have expected it from you. There are folks on the board who own large breeds and I know if I had one, I'd be a little hurt by the comment.

PS- Sorry, Bo, didn't mean for this thread to go in another direction... I am just so happy Maggie May is ok. I hope Jackson can give his girlfriend some smooches next time he sees her.

I'm not mad, and not sure why you take offense to my labeling them oversized monsters. I grew up with an oversized monster. Her name was Lucky, she was a beautiful german shepherd who died just weeks before her 17th birthday. If she were still alive, I would not let her play with my three babies.

My misinterpretation of the word I suppose, I call Jax a monster on occasion, but thought you were using in a "bad" way, I must have just mis-read!

I also grew up with a Shepherd and miss her dearly.

IMHO, any dog is capable of being a Monster. We are more concerned when our daughter visits with her toy poodle. That Dog is 9 pounds, and a beast. Carlo is 135, but never has been a monster, yet we are aware that he can hurt small dogs with his big paws or if he gets excited. We will put him in another room when the little dogs are out together because they are little Monsters when together, but angelic when they are alone.

Bottom line, Large dog-small dog, small dog-Tiny dog, you have to use common sense and be careful. Mr Murphy is always out there, waiting.

When Carlo does pass, not sure if we will get another large Breed like Carlo, even though I would love one. I am getting older, and they take a ton of training and sociialization. A Large breed puppy could cause a lot of damamge in a short period of time. We are in a way fortunate that Carlo and Maxine grew up together with a lot of care and watching, and now Carlo has slowed down very much and pretty much ignores the boys.

Thats my story, and I am sticking too it. I will never come down on anyone who wants a large breed when they also have small breeds. I know it can work, but I also know the risks and rewards. Also, if some do not want their little guys around large breeds, I also understand that. My daughter will not come in with hers unless we put Carlo in the Laundry room. She is very afraid for her dog. Me, I am afraid for Carlo. To each their own.

How scarey! I would have been beside myself.
I remember one time when I had my other Yorkie, Kayla, I had her outside on leash to potty, and this large dog came running into our yard coming at her. I scooped her up in my arms so fast. That dog just kept circling me and barking. Finally, a man that saw what was happening came over and distracted the dog and got him out of my yard. I was terrified and I know Kayla was as well.
I am so glad that Maggie May is ok.
Hugs to your little furbaby.

I did this one morning like I always had, and on the way back, out pops a black lab, he had always been tied up, but this one morning he wasn't and was at the street, hiding at the front of the car that was parked on the street.

I didn't see him until it was too late. He had Champ in his mouth. There was nothing I could do! All the screaming wasn't going to persuade him to let go. His mouth was so big it went from one side of Champ to the other!

I had to kick the dog underneath and knock the breathe out of him long enough to get Champ out of his mouth! I got him and ran! Luckily it was just 2 houses from mine. I noticed the puncture wounds that champ had and knew it was bad, he was passing out as we got home.

I called the vet, told them I was on the way! Luckily it's a 5 min drive. He was lucky because I got him there so quickly and got him on antibiotics so quickly. He recovered but I was terrified to take our walks again.

The following day, I made an agreement that if I paid the vet bill, the neighbor would get rid of her lab so this would not happen to another person's dog, as we all take our dogs for walks and it could have been any of us.

That was one of the scariest days of my life. I knew if Champ died while Duane was in Iraq it would kill him.
Wow, so glad Champ was okay. You must have been so frightened! It was very understanding and nice of your neighbor to see things your way. It's nice that there are owners who take responsibility for the animals.
