| Separation anxiety ? Our little Ginger (7 months old) lives with me, my husband, and my college age daughter. Daughter may be leaving home for an internship for a few months and is concerned about how this will affect Ginger. My husband and I will still be here, in the same home where she lives...do we need to worry about separation anxiety? Will Ginger be "mad" at daughter, or (worse, yet) forget her? |

| They never forget. I really like your post. It shows how much you love your Yorkie and are concerned about her happiness. For the most part dogs live in the now. She will never forget someone she loves. But, she will adjust to a new routine. When an elderly person died, I saw her older dog who had spent her entire life with just that one person, accept a new family and home. The dog seemed to understand her best friend had gone away and that these good people were her new family. It may take a while for her to grasp that your daughter is not coming home every day like before. She will transfer her needs to you and may need a little more affection than usual . Then things will settle into a new pattern. She will feel safe and secure if she gets what she is used to. Meals, playtime, walks, and of course lap time.

| This post made my heart ache a little bit. When I moved out of my parents house and got married, I ended up leaving not just Mom and Dad, but my "little sister" Maizey who's a Cairn Terrier. I always told my mom she was my dog because every morning, since she was a puppy, I would be getting ready to go to college and Maizey would come bouncing around the corner, pounce into my lap, and look at me like "You're not going anywhere!!" May-may was a little upset the first few weeks, but she's gotten alot better. Especially since I go to vist her, alot. I think your baby will be fine like Maizey. She may look around the house for your daughter, but that'll soon change and she'll accept that "Sister" isn't gone forever, but just going on a long "walkie".

Be prepared for Ginger to pout for a few days. Both my kids are away at University. When they are home for visits ZoE loves it! When they leave she is depressed for a few days and goes around the house looking for them. I don't like to close the doors to the kids bedrooms for weeks on end, so I bought gates to put in their doorwayss so air still circulates. After their most recent visit home, before the start of this fall semester, ZoE climbed the gate to go sleep on my daughter's bed. ZoE has also dragged dirty laundry they've left here....I'm not talking lil socks...I'm talking heavy sweatshirts...into her bed to snuggle with. It's the cutest thing...but kinda sad too.

| Thanks so much, everyone, for your help and your stories. Seems like life is always about changes. I think it may be worse for my daughter than for little Ginger! |
