| Personally I think time and money should be put in better adapting spay and neuter procedures to make them safer and more affordable... It mentions the costs of spays and neuters in the article, but honestly if I can't afford to spay my dog, can I afford to buy it pills every month?

| I saw that article - personally, I'd rather just spay/neuter my dogs

| Birth control isn't 100% effective in humans, it wouldn't be 100% in animals either. Not to mention the hormones involved with birth control. Not sure I'd want to take that chance with my girl-cancer is scary!

| I'm glad I had my Nala spayed and would do it again being presented with the birth control option. |

| Must have been developed by a man. This sounds silly. Moving on! Spay/Neuter your pet if you don't want puppies.

| I advocate spay and neuter for all dogs that will not be intentionally bred. The only application I can see is for show dogs, to prevent them from being in heat during shows, or competition. Show dogs must be in unaltered. Most people do not breed show bitches until their show career is finished. I really do not think Vets would recommend birth control pills or shots for pets. Why would a monthly medication be preferred to spay or neuter for pets that will never be bred. Unless there is a medical reason a dog can not be sterilized, I firmly believe spay and neuter, would and should be the first choice of responsible Vets and pet owners. I do not know if birth control would work with wild dog populations. Honestly I have never thought about it.

| I would just spay/neuter my babies and save myself the hassle. People that don't S/N plan to breed so why would they buy birth control pills? Plus, pills have side effects, most people S/N to reduce likelihood of cancer and other health problems. S/N all the way!! lol!

| I suppose this could be useful for animals that cannot be sterilized due to a medical issue, or for show dogs. However, I'd be scared of the side effects! People that aren't responsible enough to s/n their animals would never remember to give the pills as scheduled

Thor's Human Donating Member | Interesting. I would be willing to consider this, or another thread I've seen here, vasectomies for male dogs. There are physical consequences to sterilization (such as greater bone growth), and alternate strategies might be healthier. On the other hand, they might not. I'd wait until there was some good data on what the healthiest option was.
