I advocate spay and neuter for all dogs that will not be intentionally bred. The only application I can see is for show dogs, to prevent them from being in heat during shows, or competition. Show dogs must be in unaltered. Most people do not breed show bitches until their show career is finished.
I really do not think Vets would recommend birth control pills or shots for pets. Why would a monthly medication be preferred to spay or neuter for pets that will never be bred. Unless there is a medical reason a dog can not be sterilized, I firmly believe spay and neuter, would and should be the first choice of responsible Vets and pet owners.
I do not know if birth control would work with wild dog populations. Honestly I have never thought about it.
