Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | About how long? Just curious...about how long did it take each of you to potty train your Yorkies? I have been reading a lot on the subject lately and was wondering about some real world experience. Thanks! Have a great weekend!

| Well my first little boy, took me about 7 months to completely potty train him. The I was in an accident and broke my back and could not find anyone to pick him up and babysit for 48 hours (my daughter was being babysat by a neighbor so she went home frequently to feed and play with him) when I came home from the hospital 18 days later my cousin dropped him off at home to me and his potty training had gone out the window, it was like he had never been trained. Took me about 5-6 months to retrain him. My girl, took about 2 months to completely train. My next little boy, sadly was about 1 1/2 before he caught on, but still liked to mark. Next little boy was the same, he was good about going outside but I could not ever break him of the marking (good thing for belly bands) Nya came to us trained, surprisingly, and I swear she would rather explode than pee in the house. She will not even use a pee pad, she will hold it as long as neccasary. We went to a wedding out of town a few months back and I left a potty pad for her, but she did not sue it and did not mess in the house. We were gone about 11 hours. I think it is amazing for her being a rescue who was confined to a seperate part of the house away from people for 3 years before we got her...

| Every Yorkie pup is different. Some are absolute wonders and take to it immediately, others take longer. Either way, the more effort the humans put into setting up the pup to succeed, the faster the pup typically trains.

| I experiences a fair amount of frustration while training Dink because he did not catch on very fast. Then he would make progress, and then mess up. It took longer for him to catch on than other dogs I am familiar with. My sister's Aussie Shepherd was trained when she got him, and he took about two days to figure out what to do at her house. I think it was at least 3 weeks before Dinky even figured out what I was trying to get him to do. He was 5 months when we got him, and he was probably fully trained by 7 months. I just did not know if he was ever going to get it. But he did. I just had to hang in there. |

| My little Lucy caught on to papper training quick. But then I moved her paper to another spot that she wasn't happy about but within a couple of weeks she decided to let me have my way. Now my Prince (boy) will also go on the paper. But he still wants to mark and he is 4 years old. I still have to watch him! He will only mark when I leave the room. Sneaky little bugger! So I make sure he is either with me when I leave the room (which he follows me everywhere so no problem there) or I let him outside. Both of them would rather go outside but while I am at work if they need to go they will use the puppy pads. Hang in there and be presistant... |

| I think it depends on the dog and the human.

| Of course it depends on how old your dog or puppy is when you start the training. Puppies do not have any control over their bladders until they are 16 weeks and then it is not complete control. Up until that point it is all a matter of establishing a routine, a matter of habit. Gracie is the first dog I have used pee pads with and I noticed she was attracted to pee on them right away. I'm not saying she had control but I think the hormone scent that they put on those pads attracts the puppy when they may have to go. I think using a puppy pad or one of the liquid house breaking aids would help the puppy to understand what they are supposed to do when you take them out. When you are not home during the day it increases the amount of time it is going to take to train a puppy. All those hours the puppy is left alone is time away from their training. You only have a few hours to work with the puppy a day by the time you get home. If you are dealing with a puppy you have to remember that they do not have full bladder control and they need to be taken out frequently. They can never be left alone in the house until they are trained. I used to keep my puppy with me on a leash so it would not wonder away and so I would not lose sight of the puppy. |

| Bevo took a good year!!! But our other two picked right up on it from watching him./. We use potty pads! I really haven't had to train them! It's been wonderful!!!!! We are very persistent treaters though, and they know they will get a treat eveytime we see them go.... So they will force themselves to potty sometimes and run straight to the treat jar! It's hilarious!

Well, we got Harry at 3 months old - and I would say it took another 2 months to get him totally house-trained. We tried using pads - but he thought they were a game of fetch! So really it was vigilance, and taking him out after all the normal trigger times. Are you at home all day? It really, really helps if you are!! It's brilliant if you can catch them mid-pee - a sharp 'no', pick him/her up and take them out to the designated place - they're so intelligent, they soon catch on. I must admit, we've been extremely fortunate with Harry - he goes into his crate (in our room, next to our bed) at about 10 p.m, and doesn't wake up or need anything at all until the alarm goes off about 6.30 in the morning. But he's a 'bigger' Yorkie (about 12 lbs now) so I think that helps? Just to give you a bit of hope (!!) - we've had a schnauzer, boxers, labradors - and Harry the Yorkie has been by far the easiest to potty train! Good luck! Sally + Harry x | |

| He was like 95% by 6 months. I'd say he was 100% by one year.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | By the time Taycie was 6 months she completely trained. When she was almost 4 months she boycotted pads completely. So we had a slight hiccup but once we did away with the pads she was golden!

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Thank you all sooo much for your input! I really appreciate it! I am a housewife and will be home with our pup pretty much all the time. My husband works for the railroad and is gone a lot. So I will be right with her and will keep a sharp eye out. I hope I can get her trained on the pads at first. lovespanp....We hope we will have our Yorkie by the end of October or the first of November some time. We are very excited!!! I have been researching like crazy and talking to everyone I can find with Yorkies. I am like addicted! I just can't wait for her to get here!
