| Tomato Ketchup? Good evening! Another question, please! My OH is very proud of our garden - especially the lawn!!! We've (nearly) always had 'girl dogs' - with the brown wee-wee patches that go with them! Harry's been lifting his leg for a few months now - on the tree and the fence-posts etc., but also on the grass. As he's still a baby I don't particularly want to change him from doing that (just grateful he always goes outside!) but I've been looking into what I can do to stop him killing the grass! One of the solutions that keeps cropping up is putting a squirt of tomato ketchup on their food - but I thought tomatoes were bad for our babies? What do you think? Apart from getting rid of your husbands and laying astro-turf, please do you have any suggestions/remedies?! Sally + Harry x |

| I've never heard of the ketchup thing but Scooter pees up a storm outside on every standing object in the yard and he's never killed anything yet. I don't think they pee enough to do much harm.

I know there is a supplement that you can add to their water to take away some of the acid that is in their urine. You should ask your vet about something. Don't experiment on Harry.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Hmmm...I'm not sure whether or not tomatoes are bad for the dogs, but I would stay away from ketchup simply because of the amount of sugar and salt that they are made with. If your little guy's urine is so acidic that's it's killing everything in sight, it might not be a bad idea to have him checked by a vet to make sure he's getting enough fluid to dilute the urine and that he isn't developing a condition that could lead to other problems such as bladder stones.

| Ketchup has onion powder and garlic powder in it which is not good for dogs. They have chewable tablets at the pet store for "saving your grass" but in my opinion grass is grass and you should not give your dog something that has chemicals in it just to save your grass and that could harm them or not be good for them.

| As many stray dogs pee in my yard, I don't have urine burns. We water every evening.

| I have 4 females, and until recently a male, plus daughter's & friends dogs that visit, and have no urine burns in grass. I wonder if it depends on what kind of grass you have, how often you water/feed/mow etc.?

| Good morning! Thank you all for your replies. Firstly, I would never, ever experiment on little Harry - I never did with 'the girls' either. Basically I don't care what colour the grass is! The point of this post was - on Googling about it - that tomato ketchup kept rearing it's ugly head as a remedy! Which shocked and surprised me! Who on earth ever tried it in the first place?!!? Oh, and by the way, it rains every day in England........!!!!! Sally + Harry x |
