| ![]() We should all remember that the next time we witness someone saying such a thing to tell them the following: Since people pay so much for their yorkies, most all yorkie (or insert whatever breed here) owners have their pets microchipped. The policies of all vets are to check microchips against the identity of the owners who have brought their pets in for treatment. If you steal an expensive purebred dog, you will be caught and you will go to prison. Now, we know that this is not the policy at all vets but this may work to dissuade someone from taking the route of just stealing a pet. This terrifies me so much, I am even afraid to leave them home when I leave should the house be robbed and I wouldn't even consider taking them out where I might have to leave them in my car for even a very short time. I used to love to take my kids "bye-bye" but no more unless I can watch them at all times. There are a lot of rotten people out there and now, even more so with this horrible economy. |

| ![]() Seems like a true dog lover that found a loose dog would want to get it back to its owner as soon as they could!

| ![]() I think she meant it for sure but for one of two reasons: to see if you would agree/condone or just to get at you. Either way it's a terrible thing to say. Even before I felt the close love of my own dog I knew enough to know it'd be terrible to separate a dog from it's owner with no TRULY JUST cause. I also thought if something valued over $100 is stolen it's a felony here, but my info may be outdated. If it's true would that law apply to an animal? Bet she wouldn't be working much of any where with a felony on her record, not to mention the shame in getting one by stealing a dog. My biggest fear if I were to leave Princess alone outside or even a temp controlled vehicle is someone taking her. I worry about that more than her running away or having a mishap. And I'd certainly accept a misdemeanor if necessary to get my baby back. ![]()

| ![]() I am still shocked that someone would say that. Think it? Sure.. The sad thing is I know many people that have had dogs and cats stolen, but to see absolutely nothing wrong with stealing someone's dog and SAY it? No, I have ended up with an extra dog because I found it. BUT I did the responsible thing and reported to the shelter I found the dog, and always check the dog to see if the dog is chipped, (I have a friend that has a universal scanner). I chose not to turn the dog over to the shelter because of the over crowded nature of the shelter, and because so many dogs have been known to catch kennel cough there. And because I know the dog only has a limited time there. If the dog isn't chipped or tatooed, the law here says you own the dog after 90 days. But again, I try to find the owner, I don't just say, oh look, I have a new dog! I think that is the difference between responsible dog owners and those who look at dogs as a commodity. WE love our dogs and they're a part of our family, they're not something we just throw away. Those that see dogs as a commodity see nothing wrong with stealing a dog from someone else, they don't love the dog, they want the status that comes with owning such a dog. Even if it's a cool looking mutt. |

| ![]() We just had a report on the news last eve that dog thefts are up 50% this past year and the the most stolen breed is the Yorkie. They cautioned ppl who owned this breed to be careful. They also said if you are buying a Yorkie, stay away from the internet (esp. Craigs List and the like) bc a lot of stolen dogs (esp. Yorkies) are sold on these sites at very low prices, along w a fictitious story about rehoming due to hardship. What is wrong w ppl? ![]()

![]() Lots of good suggestions! I know many people say that they don't want to give it to the local pound for the things you mention, but many pounds will take your number and even a picture of the dog for their bulletin board. There are also many online resources to help in finding the owner. I have no problem with someone keeping the dog if the truly have made in effort to find the owner. For those of you with microchips, make sure your vet reads it yearly to see if it's still working right.

Nancy has some really great ideas; if you find a dog and are scared to take it to animal control take a pic of it, drop it at animal control for their FOUND dog list & then take it to any vet's office to get it scanned for a chip-but beware in the mean time many dog's (like all of mine) have allergies, medical conditions & special needs.
