No, I have ended up with an extra dog because I found it. BUT I did the responsible thing and reported to the shelter I found the dog, and always check the dog to see if the dog is chipped, (I have a friend that has a universal scanner).
I chose not to turn the dog over to the shelter because of the over crowded nature of the shelter, and because so many dogs have been known to catch kennel cough there. And because I know the dog only has a limited time there.
If the dog isn't chipped or tatooed, the law here says you own the dog after 90 days. But again, I try to find the owner, I don't just say, oh look, I have a new dog!
I think that is the difference between responsible dog owners and those who look at dogs as a commodity. WE love our dogs and they're a part of our family, they're not something we just throw away.
Those that see dogs as a commodity see nothing wrong with stealing a dog from someone else, they don't love the dog, they want the status that comes with owning such a dog. Even if it's a cool looking mutt.

Lots of good suggestions! I know many people say that they don't want to give it to the local pound for the things you mention, but many pounds will take your number and even a picture of the dog for their bulletin board. There are also many online resources to help in finding the owner. I have no problem with someone keeping the dog if the truly have made in effort to find the owner. For those of you with microchips, make sure your vet reads it yearly to see if it's still working right.
