| Have another flea med question.... Peanut is still fighting allergies. I feel so badly for him. He is HIGHLY allergic to fleas. He is on advantage 2 and he gets a capstar 1x a week. He is bathed in a 5% cortisone shampoo 2x a week. Our vet said that he would recommend Comfortis, but, Peanut only weighs 4.70 pounds. The start dose weight is 5 pounds. He can't put him on it without telling me that their might be some risk, even tho he is really close to five pounds. The advantage 2 is working, but, with his baths; I feel and the vet does as well, that it is weakening the strength of the flea med. He said that Advantage is one of the least waterproof... So, would you chance it with the comfortis??? Keep on doing what I am doing??? I know it is ultimately my decision, but, just wanted some other opinions on this. The vet said that more than likely there would be no problem. Do I take that chance???? What to do, what to do??? This flea mess is driving me nuts. We have never had bugs like this before. Our yards are sprayed and granuled, everything we can think of, I do. I wash his beds 2x a week. I am at a loss.....

| Im sorry you are having such a problem with fleas. I agree with you that the baths are kind of cancelling the flea med (advantage). I that you cannot bathe your dog until 3 days after the medicine is applied. I dont know if I will chance it with the comfortis. It's just that if something does happen, comfortis can't really do anything because the recommendation for use was not followed.

| ok.. the baths are to help him with the itching? Is there something else you can do to help with the itching.. read some of the threads on apple cider vinegar.. I have heard about garlic (have not tried or used so research first) or maybe allergy meds to get you through this. Are the fleas active in your house-- on his bedding etc? You may have to spray your house. I used borax one year when we had a really bad outbreak. I sprinkled it around all the edges of the rooms, outside of the house etc. Some of the meds don't prevent flea bites, the fleas die but they bite your baby first. Some meds prevent the feas from reproducing. Check into that. I alter between frontline and advantics.. in my mind that helps My vet recommended a new med.. I have to go in today and I will ask him about it. If it is something different I will post for you. Good luck

| We live in Fl. Fleas are a problem all year. 2 years ago we spent a small fortune to get rid of fleas. We ripped up carpet, had the lawn and craw space professionally treated. We even treated every piece of furniture ( The dust cover part on the underside of sofas, mattresses etc.) Our dogs were on Advantix rotated with Frontline Plus. We still had fleas ! I was desperate and ask everyone for help. An older retired breeder here in Fl sent me a detailed letter about what she did when she had a kennel in the 1960s. 1. Use 7 dust on any grass dogs walk through. (I was afraid of chemicals so we didn't do this one) 2. REPLACE any soft stuffing in the bed / pillow the dogs uses. Pull the stuffing out and fill with cedar chips (you can buy at Wal-mart or feed stores) Dont pack this tight, the chips should be able to move around some. Make washable covers for the beds or pillows and change that first week daily then, two times a week, then once a week. You have to break the cycle of fleas. We used towels to cover the beds/ crate pads, until I made pillow cases for them. 3. Bathe dogs with dish soap rinse well with 1 cup white vinegar to gallon of tepid water. After they are dry use a fine flea comb to remove any eggs. Bath every 3rd week after fleas are gone. 4. Sprinkle powdered garlic on their food or give garlic tablets. 5. Spray regular rubbing acohol on their combs and brushes before using them. 6. Comb with the flea comb every day, especialy check the face and tail area. We did 2,3,4,5 and 6. The flea problem seemed to improve right away. We also switched to Comfortis an oral flea med about 3 months later. Now we have most of the dogs on Revolution which is a combo flea and heart worm pill. We have no fleas. |
