| Eye mats My neighbor has a tiny maltese and she has asked me to please sit for him while she visits her Mom for 2 days. He's a sweet little guy but he has terrible gunk in the corners of his eyes. He's clean and not matted but I guess she just "forgot" about his eyes. It's really thick so what would be a safe way to clean him up. I can't stand looking at his sweet little eyes with all that gunk on them. I tried to gently rub it off with a baby wipe but it won't budge. Help?

| I just use a plain warm face cloth. I just keep rinsing it off in warm water and reapplying it to the gunky spots.

| ok I have been told a little peroxide in water and use a cotton ball. Does anyone know what causes this, my 2 females don't have it very bad, but it is horrible with my 2 males, they are all Yorkies.

| Wouldn't peroxide be dangerous to use near the eyes?

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I don't think I'd use peroxide. Why chance it when warm water & wash cloth will do it. If the eye goober isn't real big, it should soften up quite quickly. I find almost easier to use my fingernails to pull it away from the eyes. Don't know the cause really. Sometimes a change in diet makes a huge difference, sometimes it's the drinking water. The cause may differ from one dog to another.

| I use both the warm wash cloth and my fingernails. I rather go all natural if possible.
