| New Yorkie owner...Have questions.... First I wanna say I am so glad I found this site.... This place is going to be so helpful!!!!! I have some questions... I am a new yorkie owner, I adopted a 10 month old yorkie who is just about to turn 1 in a week. Her name is CoCo Channel (I added the Channel part), she is very playful, and has very selective hearing...yep shes spoiled! The reason we actually got her was due to the lost of our 4 yr old white germ. shep that got out of my yard by jumping the fence to chase a rabbit, and he got hit by a car.... so not only did that break my husbands heart and mine but it broke are other dog Bella Marie who is a mini aust.shep/Bichon heart as well. Bella had never been a only dog and and them 2 were so attached, so bella had been grieving, we figured get a dog that stay small where bella was the one was the "mother figure" the bigger one for once ect.... so we got CoCo. I didnt understand why CoCo hadnt been adopted yet and I was told cause she wasnt docked, well I had no clue what they were talking about (thank god for google) show that shows I didnt know much about yorkies, but shes so cute and looks just fine to me. i also didnt know they need the hair plucked from ears So I have a few questions... 1. I have got her hair plucked her ears and she still scratched them, and the odor i can smell from across the room...I've figured it was a ear infection from everything I have read. I read if you didnt pluck them they could get them. I noticed in the past few days since i had them plucked the odor has got worse....... yes I have cleaned them with dog ear cleaner, and yes i am going to take her to vet, but I am wondering/praying that thats what it is....if looked in her ear and its lots nasty stuff and its very strong. Ive also notice after i clean her ears or or give her a bath the smell is even stronger, which thats pretty strong! 2. CoCo also throws up maybe 1x a week or 1x every other week and it can be anywhere from 2 hrs after she eats to 5 hrs after she eats, OH im wondering if there is something special i should feed yorkies, I do feed her small breed soft dog food 3. the barking....she barks at the wall.... she barks at the wind, I'v try everything, the No bark coco, i try the spray water in face and say no bark..... HELP, sometimes its ok 4. any special tips, special needs, from cleaning/grooming,food, anything about yorkies would be great 5. potty training...oh we are still having a few accidents in the home 6. she weighs 5lbs at this age (1), do you think she will get any bigger? 7.I was told yorkies get bad teeth is that true? 8. oh the hair in ears, do I pluck it for now on, or just keep having the groomer? and how often? Yep I know nothing about yorkies I love my yorkie she is so cute and loving i did find out you have to brush them before you bath them and after.... poor thing was matted up I had to get her almost shaved and start her all over, thank god its summer Coco loves her some attention, and doesnt like when you give it to someone else Sorry this is long and might sound kinda stupid but like I said i dont know anything bout yorkies I just knew she was so cute and had to have her! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | WELCOME ! I'll try to address your questions for you: 1) Sounds like a normal ear infection if it's smelly and looks too grungy in there. Vet will give you a prescription ointment or drops - it should clear up well. Most oint/drops cover both fungal and bacterial. 2) The throwing up really is important - def tell the vet about this. Also consider - what did she eat w/ the breeder, what did you switch her too -- you have to look at the ingredients, the fat vs protein etc, and what form of food (ie, kibble from the breeder, canned from you or). So, the first step is to look backward. With the eating, she doesn't act strange right after eating a meal does she? Like, wobbly, confused, presses her head on the couch or...? 3) LOL. So, she's a barky McBarkerton - we have a few of those on this board - both dog and human . One thing that works for some is to fill a can w/ some coins and shake it when you want them to stop barking. Another thing to do is make a loud/fast HISSSSSS or a SHHHHH - and this will sometimes bring them back from the bark abyss. What I do is I tell them "Hey, it's okay, it's all good" - very calmly...just to tell them I do appreciate them watching their territory, lol. If they continue to go bonkers, then I ususally pick them up and say "thank you, it's okay, ssshhhhhh". 4) There is awesome info about treats/food in the Health Section, and the Grooming section is wonderful. Also, if you look toward the very top of the forum page - you'll see the YT Library - and there is so much helpful info in there. 5) We get lots of potty threads here - there is a section for that too - you can look in the General Training sectioin. 6) I think she will stay that size...or vary by a few ounces. 7) Yorkies do have somewhat of a reputation of bad teeth - and we do discuss dental stuff quite a bit in the Health section. People do a combo of preventive things like dog chews, CET Dental Chews, raw marrow bones, brushing teeth, dental water additives, dental pwdrs for on their food etc etc 8) I don't pluck my 3 babies ears and never really have. They don't have ear issues and their ears smell delicious, lol. That said, if they were prone - I may pluck then. But, your kiddo might not be 'prone', per se, but maybe this is just the first infection. I'd say most people like their yorkies ears plucked once a mth or so. You can def do it yourself, it's easy. Hope that helps! Ann

| Welcome to YorkieTalk ! Wylie's Mom seems to addressed your questions with her usual expertise . I just wanted to add a note on being patient with your new little yorkie. Our Sophie was a real little barker but now that she is just over two she responds very well to the No Bark command. Sometimes it just takes a little while. This site is awesome and exploring it will be lots of fun and educational. There is so much support here, it's amazing. Please post photos when you get a chance.

| Ann, Thank you so much, all that helped very much. As for the food, the lady...WOW she was a odd one, well she has a shelter for dogs, which I think is wonderful, I called her a few days after we had CoCo cause she wouldnt. I let the 1st day go, but by the 2nd day I I was concerned, and wanted to know what she fed her,or if she had certain color bowl ect,and her reply was..."I feed them what ever is on sale or donated,or I boil hamberger" so 1st thing came to my mind was she gave them/her table scrapes or what ever was on sale. So I did the slowy mixing the wet food and dry food, and the vet said try broth in the dry food, or even try plain yogurt. She eats just fine now, she likes wet food better then dry, and she does like the soft better then dry, I do try to mix it up together. She acts totally fine after she eats. After I sat and thought about all night she doesnt seem to eat the dry food as much as she does the wet or even soft. The wet food last not even a minute in her bowl, and the dry can be in there all day. So I am thinking I am going to have to cut the dry food out and just do wet and soft. I just have always heard dry is better, but you should still give wet food as well. But like I said she doesnt act funny at all, shes normal playful, running, jumping, trying to body slam the other dog all the time! Shes such a bully! I figure it will take some time for me to figure out and for CoCo to figure what she likes and what will work with her. I have noticed she eats grass like a cow,she eats sticks, she eats anything.... my other dog does it to, they both are always outside just eating grass like its nothing. I would be worried but my other dog has did it since we've had her which was since she was 8 weeks old The can thing I am going to have to try that, cause the spray bottle thing worked until my kids (who are teen boys) would just use it when they wanted her to away from them ect....in other words they didnt use it for the right thing, I noticed i would spray her and say no bark and she would stop but a min later she would do it again. CoCo thinks she owns the street, lady across the street going have a heart attack everytime she gets her mail! Do Does anyones yorkie HATE the car????? CoCo gets so sosososo car sick, once we put her in the car within 1 min she is drenched in drool, she just lays there, and she will get sick and sometimes she doesnt get sick until we get where we are goinging. But I have never seen a dog drool like this, she looks like she stuck her chin in her water. I am looking into some motion/car sickness meds. She doesnt even want to get in the car, poor thing I feel so sorry for her! Both my dogs are going to be mad at me in a few weeks (after we move) cause in the new house we have 2 living rms, and one is hard wood, and 1 I just had new carpet laid and new furniture,so the dogs will not be aload in the one with new carpet, but thats ok,cause the other one will have the furniture we have now in it and its more the rec rm...I've made it the my teen boys living rm so they dont live in their bedrms. |

| You need to have this dog evaluated by your vet. Soon. There are various types of things that can bother a dog's ear. It sounds like your dog may have a type of fungus infection. That typed of infection typically occurs in an ear that tends to be too moist and that type of situation causes fungus to grow. It smells bad and tends to have brown ear muck inside. Being a Yorkie the vomiting could be something serious so the vet really needs to evaluate that. You might want to find a dog trainer or dog classes in your area that can help you with your dog. Terriers can be very strong willed, not all of them but some, so you need to have the knowledge necessary to deal with the personality type. I hope you and the new member of your family work things out. It sounds like this little one has not had the best start in life. Hope things get better. Soon. |

| Welcome, it sounds like you have received some great advice. Hope Coco is in a fenced area when she is outside barking at your neighbor.

| Hi and welcome to yorkietalk. I hope you learn lots of information here, i learn something new almost daily. It does sound like she has an ear infection and when you take her to the vet I would also ask about the throwing up. Dry dog food is much better for there teeth then wet food also you should brush her teeth to keep them healthy and it will make her less likely to lose them in the future. My groomer plucks the ear hair everytime she gets groomed but sometimes if I wait longer between groomings or for some reason they didnt do it good I will do it. I bathe Callie weekly sometimes every two weeks in the winter. Yorkies dont have undercoats so they can get colder then other dogs some more so then others if you live in a place that gets cold winters you will probably want to buy her a jacket or two.
