| How old to come home? I recently found a yorkie born on May 20th. The breeder called me yesterday and said it is time for you to come pick him up. Is this age appropriate to come home to me? He would be almost 8 weeks old. I felt that was a bit too young but asking everyone what they feel. Thanks Jeanna.... Ciarra's mommy |

| Congratulations on your new arrival and welcome to YT. Eight weeks is way too young. 11-12 weeks is the earliest most breeders will let Yorkie puppies go to a new home. |

| no earlier than 12 weeks old....at 8 weeks that baby is just now starting to eat on its own but still nursing from mom...and at 8 weeks they are just now starting to learn bitting inhabits and what is acceptable behavior from mom and littermates they need to stay with mom and littermates until 12 weeks....I would ask the breeder if she will keep the pups with mom until 12 weeks old...if not and your heart is set on this pup...you will have to teach him/her all of this and it could take awhile and you will have to worry about low blood sugar, making sure this pup eats every few hours, you won't be able to play with the pup any longer than 10 minutes at a time than its eat, potty and sleep for a few hours or more...its like having an infant...if your heart isn't set on this pup I would run and look for a better breeder...a breeder that lets her pups go at 8 weeks, don't care about anything but the all mighty dollar.

Most reputible breeders don't let their babies go before 12 weeks. Gizmo was a puppymill/BYB dog and he was taken away at 8 weeks. Thankfully he hasn't been too challenging, but alot of times being so young you literally have to start from square one with everything. This can casue alot of stress and heartache not just for the puppy but for the owner too. So, see if you can get her to keep the little pumpkin a few weeks longer.

| Logan was just over 8weeks when we got him from our breeder but i think the laws are different here in UK as we got him from an acredited kennel club breeder and when contacting kennel club they said 8 weeks was the usual age for leaving Still he came home to our house where we have another yorkie and a big lab so he had other dogs to learn from and he is doing well but for the first two weeks was a lot of work waking through the night sleeping, eating and needing taken out to potty lots but all worth it When we got Lily she was only 6 weeks old at this time i didnt know that the kennel club states they should be 8weeks old however again we had 2 other dogs at home and strangely she was very easy to train and fitted in to our family easily and is a great dog yvonne xxx

| For a yorkie puppy it is always reccomended to get them at 12 weeks old or older. I did not know this, and brought home Suzi when she was going on 9weeks. She is a little over 3yrs old now. Something that she still does is "suckle" on her blankets . She puts holes in them. I always thought that she was weaned too early. I think a lot of these unwanted behaviors can be advoided if the puppy is allowed to stay with it's littermates and mother for the reccomended time.

| If you can get the breeder to keep your baby a little longer he will have a chance to learn some very important doggie social things that you would otherwise have to teach. However if the breeder is not going to allow your baby to actually BE with mommy and other littermates if he stays then I dont see the point. The purpose of 12 weeks over 8 weeks is to learn social skills from who he has been with all along. So I would want to make sure that if he stays longer that he will actually be benefiting from the stay. Just a thought...... |
