| ![]() I didn't get Uni spayed until she was almost 4 years old bc of the same fear! The sooner you get it done the better. Make sure Poppy has her bloodwork done before hand, that is a must. Uni had the softee cone and also a onesie. I used the onesie first then after the onesie came off I used the cone off and on. She didn't really lick at her stitches too much.

| ![]() Your fears are understandable. My Yorkie from College, Jackie (who lived to the great age of 17), was not spayed until she was 4. She did great after the surgery - and that was years ago. She was a little bit of a drama queen and made the most out of the event to get a few extra treats. She loved the extra attention. These little ones bounce back very quickly. I took Poppy in to be fixed when she was 6 months. I was very nervous and I freaked out a bit when they called me early to pick her up. They said they would call around noon. Well, they were able to get her into surgery first thing and they called me at 9am to let me know she was okay and could be picked up anytime. She came home and was a total snuggle bug. I took the rest of the week off of work to be home with her. She did great. Hang in there and try not to get to anxious. Hope all goes well next week. Will check back for updates. |

| ![]() If you trust your vet to prescribe medication for your pet then trust your vet to do this operation. Remember they are spaying little kittens and ferrets and the like that are much smaller than you dog. Years ago I had a little Maltese female puppy that went into heat sooner than I expected she would. She contracted a uterine infection during that heat and almost died. I would never take the risk of not spaying my female dog again. Our babies depend on us to take care of them. I used to have a small Shih Tzu male that was very attached to us and I was so worried about having to leave my poor little guy there because he would be so afraid. Actually if the truth be known I was putting my fears on my little guy and not admitting the truth of it to myself. He needed to be neutered for his own good. A day of being away from us was soon forgotten and he was a much happier dog. Don't transfer your fears onto your pet and then cause them to suffer for it. |

| ![]() I understand your love of Poppy and fear, and all that matters is that you are going to do the right things for her now. All of my girls did really well after their spays, and they also had dentals at least once a year. We had to stop putting Ashley under anesthesia unless absolutely necessary after she was ten years old because she had an enlarged heart. Still, she needed one larger surgery and a couple of dentals due to infections after that, one when she was sixteen. I never got used to the anesthesia, but all of my little ones came through perfectly fine each time, even when Ashley was older and had medical problems. I will keep be thinking of both of you on Thursday. You are going to be so much happier once this is behind you. I'll keep both of you in my prayers. Last edited by lisaly; 07-03-2011 at 01:35 PM. |

| ![]() I have the fear, too, and I worked as a Vet Tech for 15 years. Can't remember losing any to a spay, though. Just don't want to lose them. I believe your BF lost his dog to anesthesia read that in an old post, if I remember correctly. And she was a Bulldog. Bull Dogs are brachycephalic (short, squished nosed) and that alone makes them a much higher risk for surgery. Yorkies are not brachycephalic, but you can have pre-op bloodwork done to be sure she can handle the anesthesia. It does not show allergies though, but that would still be rare. Don't beat yourself up about waiting. I think older Yorkies are at a lesser risk during surgery, as their livers are full grown and can better process the anesthesia. Also you allowed her to grow up, her hormones have kicked in and have done their many jobs, so she should do fine. I'll be praying for her on Thursday. When I drop my dogs off, I will turn them over to God, as it is his decision whether to keep them with Him or give them back to me. I have the same thought whenever I have surgery, myself. It's the only way to calm my fears... Hugs to you... be strong for Poppy... ![]()

![]() Poppy is NOT going to him though, she is going to a lovely vet who has been her vet since I got her. He has been a vet for over 40 years and I do trust him with her, just still nervous ![]()

| ![]() I'll keep Poppy in my thoughts. It's scarey for anyone to leave them. I was in tears when I left my lil girl.
