Your breeder should have nothing to hide from you. The parent's should have been tested to ensure they are healthy enough to be bred. You should only be given a puppy at least 12 weeks and with a closed contract, meaning you cannot breed the puppy. You should receive a healthy contract that guarantees you will receive a healthy puppy and the breeder will be there in the event something did go wrong. You should feel that you can contact your breeder anytime with questions or concerns even AFTER they have your money. IMO, a good breeder is not just seeling dogs. They are finding forever homes for their babies.

Get the health guarantee in writing and review it carefully. There should be a general contract too.

The breeder should be equally interested in learning about you and how you plan to care for this pup. If they don't ask about you and are eager to take your payment, that is a bad sign.

Trust your instincts and continue to be patient. You will be much happier when you finally find your pup.

Before I got Max and Abby, I was able to go and visit the puppies at the breeders house on two different occasions for about 3 hours each time. I know this is not normal and a lot of breeders may not have that kind of time to spare. I got to see how the puppies interacted and played with their siblings and their mommies. Mommies were great with the puppies and with me visiting. I think the breeder was interviewing me while I was there to make sure I knew what I was getting into with these guys. She gave me her contact information to include her cell and email and asked me to contact her with any questions or concerns, and to be sure to sent her a few photos after they settled in in their new home.

Funny enough, I ran into the breeder a few days later when I took the puppies to the vet for their puppy wellness check. She was bringing in one of her dogs for a check up. She was so happy to see Max and Abby again.
