| Puppies and biting/chewing Since the day I got Bentley he has always loved to bite our hands, while playing he is always always always after them. I thought this was just puppy behaviour, normal, whatever. However now that he has some adult teeth, it hurts really bad, unlike before when it was tolerable. He is 6 months old, is this behavior still normal? When will it stop? I tried to whine or shriek in pain and remove my hand but he still comes after it. We havent been consistant with him, in telling him no but should we be? or is this just phase? |

| 6 months old? He's still is teething! The canines are usually the last to come out and the fall out. By 8 months if he hasn't lost all the baby teeth, you need to get them taken out during is neuter. If he was taken away from his mother early (before 12 weeks) it could have also played a factor. You need to try to train him out of it. My Uni play bites, meaning she will growl and snarl, but when she actually puts teeth to hand, it's very very light, much like a tap. Then I know she is just playing.

| Mina is 5 months, she lost 6 baby teeth all at once last Sunday evening. Sense then she has had all of her front upper teeth come in and today was just Thursday. I found a molar on the floor while ago. I have started crying out (OUCH!) when she bites to hard, she will pause and I tell her that she hurt me. She then licks my hand and begins to chew again, but not as hard. It just takes time for them to get that they can hurt you. I also trade with her and give her toys that she can bite as hard as she wishes. Every dog I have ever had has gone through this. I can not imagine loosing a mouth full and getting a new mouth full of teeth in less than a week. That has to hurt!! |

| Princess was really bad at biting and mouthing as an other pup. The vet advised me to say ouch or something to let them know you're startled & hurt and then put her down on the floor. I'd stand up & completely ignore her, usually go to do something else or refuse to put her on the couch with me. It took a while but it really did work. Also, I read not to play rough or even tug of war until they have established these more gentle play behaviors. I didn't teach Princess to tug until she was about 10 months old & it was even later before I "rough housed" with her, which is still super gentle, but sometimes she will mouth my hands during it and she does not bite at all. If she does get to rough I stop play, even if it doesn't hurt just to keep her mindful of how it's supposed to be done.
