| Hello Yorkie Lovers! I am new to yorkietalk.com with questions. Hello everyone, after searching around the net for a reliable source, I managed to stumble on this great site. I am new to yorkietalk.com; also I am a new owner of my first Yorkie Terrier and have a few questions. Minnie is adopted; She's 2 years of age, and she now has a great loving home with my family. My father passed away Easter Sunday of this year and the surprising death has put me & my family in deep depression. How ironic that Minnie previous owner has passed away also, I now know for sure it was meant for me to adopted her by the grace of God blessings. Ever since we got her, she has been a uplifting gift to our family, very lovable. However, I am new and would like to know a few tips on how to take care of her. I didn't take her to the veterinarian because I am waiting on her records from the previous owner son. Well, I took her to get groomed, it looks as if she hasn't been groomed in quiet some time, her hair was very tangled. Although she is nice, clean and groomed... I've notice that she has weight loss. I can feel her spinal cord, and she seems to be very thin without all the hair. Is this normal? And if not, should I have her checked for worms? How would I know if she has worms? Her appetite is very minimal (Barely Eating), and she only likes to eat table food from what I notice. I know that its not a good idea to feed table food, so I boiled her chicken and chopped it in small bits. What do you guys suggest? A guy at Petco told me to feed her Cesars Bistro Steak Florentine Flavor Dog food because of the small portion yorkies eat. So far, no good... she doesn't seem to like that at all. What to do? I've attached a picture of Minnie so you guys could see her. Thanks for you guys time, your opinions are much appreciated. |

YT Addict | Hi! Welcome! I am also a first time Yorkie owner and pretty new to this site as well. Your Minnie is very adorable!! What a cutie pie! About the food issue, you may have to try a little bit of everthing to see what she will eat. Does she eat the chicken you boiled for her? My baby LOVES Science Diet for Yorkshire terriers. I was told that you want to find a food that doesnt have TOO much protein cuz its not that good for Yorkies to have too much and the Science Diet one was the one I found to have the best ratio of ingredients. It is the dry food, I donno if your Minnie will like the dry food or not, but like I said, you may have to try a bunch of things before you find something to suit her tastes. Good luck! And welcome to YT again!

| Welcome to YT How cute she is. 1st I would take her to a vet and let them tell you if she is underweight. I see you have a collar on her, the only thing is please don't use that for her leash only use a harness on little dogs their throat could get damaged and you don't want that. We all love photos so post more!!

| Good Morning and welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congrats on your new little family member Minnie. She is a doll. You may want to go ahead and take her in for a vet check. You can always go back when you get her records if she needs to be brought up to date on vaccines and such. Here is a link to a list of great foods and lots of these companies will send you samples if you request them.http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...e-samples.html As far as not eating, My Jada was an adopted at 2.5 years old and it took about 2 weeks for her to settle in and feel like she was home. Good luck and again Congratulations!!!!

| Welcome! Go ahead and take her to the vet just to have her checked for the usual stuff and see if she is underweight, as a previous post said, u can always take her back if necessary once you get the records. As for the food issue maybe she is still a little sad about losing her previous owner, but I am sure she will warm up to your family in no time though! Maybe you can ask the previous owner's son and ask him if he knows what she was eating before. My dog was a picky eater at first but the vets best advice was "When she's hungry she'll eat," ..she did and now she'll eat just about anything we will give her (although her allergies keep her on a strict diet). Congratulations on your new baby, she's a doll! Last edited by Gabs; 06-09-2011 at 04:40 AM. |

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | She is adorable. I would agree about taking her to the vet for a check up. You can always go again for shots. You never know she could have a tooth bothering her and may be why she does not eat well. So many changes in her life right now also could cause some stress on her. You will love this site. Lots of nice people and good information. Welcome to yt.

| Congrats on the beautiful little girl you've adopted. I was so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I have found a little yorkie's love helps hearts to heal from heartache. I agree w other posts on taking her to the vet. I think a check to establish a "baseline" is a very good thing. Perhaps the vet could also help facilitate getting the old records for you. I would especially take her as her appetite is not good. It may just be the adjustment or she may just be a picky eater, but I would want to make sure nothing is wrong. Please use a harness and not a collar/leash combo for walking. These little dogs have such delicate trachea that are prone to collapsing issues. (You may already be doing this.) I've heard little cesars food is rich. You might want to try a food that is not so rich. She is a pretty little girl. Welcome to the world of yorkie ownership! Once I owned one, I could never imagine being w/o one!

| Welcome!! Mina is my first yorkie but not my first small toy dog. You will find wonderful advice on this site. I used the YorkieTalk library alot before I brought Mina in the house. You can cook for her and will find recipes here. There are some human foods that dogs can not eat because they are toxic. Mina eats Wellness for small breed. It is tiny and can be mixed into wet food or table food. I think that I read that Ceasar wet food is very rich and not very good for your baby. The dog food review is a great idea. A step in harness is very easy to put on and better for her than a collar. For our small dogs,a collar is just a necklace to hold the tags, well and the bell that is on Mina's so I can find her,she is only 5months old. I hope you enjoy your new baby and together you will be able to help each other heal. |

| Thank you all for your blessings, spactcular advise, welcoming & support. I see there is a lot of love here with a great support system, I look forward to being here for a long time. Yes, to everyone who has mentioned, I do walk her with a leash hooked to that collar. I really didn't know until now how delicate their necks are, I really do have a lot to learn. Thanks for the information, I will go out and buy a harness for her today. I am calling around for a appointment in my local LA area for her to see a veterinarian, I do feel that she's underweight & needs to be checked out. Also what a surprise, she's started her heat cycle today. Maybe that has something to do with her lack of eating? And like you all said, she may be getting adjusted to her new environment. She's been spotting up her blanket, I thought she may have had a accident, but in fact that I looked closer she is bleeding. I know that I will get her spayed because I have no plans on breeding. I wanted to know if she was fixed, but little Minnie answered that question for me this morning lol. As far as the food goes, I tossed away the cesars food and fed her the last bit of chicken I boiled and chopped for her. I will do some research on the correct food that would be better for her. In the meantime, I would like to look into these recipes "My_lil_Friend" has mentioned. If anyone can, please provide a link. God Bless |
