| ![]() Gah! I start this thread and the next day my air conditioner dies. Go figure, eh? Oh well, we are cooling down a little bit. On that note, we actually got to take our walk today, and I met three other yorkie fur babys. Thankfully they all had on harnesses and since it was still warm, their mommas had bottles of water for them!

| ![]() It's been nothing but rain and cold wind here in Northern California. It is like fall weather. I miss the sun! Oh Ms. Summer, when are you planning on showing yourself?

| ![]() Gotta be really careful with the pets. Some friends of mine live in AZ, my home state minus the military life, and they are avid hikers. They always take their dogs with them. This time though, their dog Maxx (a shepherd mix) had too much heat, even though they stopped regularly and he drank often, and they were hiking in October not summer time. Anyhow, poor Maxx died due to heat exhaustion...the vet told them his insides literally liquefied. They now don't don't their animals hiking anymore and are still heartbroken. I keep my dogs inside as much as possible...that horrified me. ![]()

| ![]() I always wonder how hot is TOO hot. It was about 93 here this week-end and our AC went out on Sunday night! I ended up taking them for a walk that evening because it was cooler outside than in our house - but the heat and humidity were TERRIBLE - even at 8 PM. Memorial Day was even worse as the temp in our house went up to 86 degrees. Needless to say, I did not walk them that evening as we had all been really hot all day. What is everyone's cut-off point for an evening walk after the sun goes down?

On Tuesday, I took Jackson along with me to go walk my dogs, like I do a lot of times. It was about 95 that day (record temps for MD in May!) but with the humidity, it was probably more like 100. As I was walking the Rottweiler and Jackson, Jackson pulled me straight towards the water (we walk around a pond) and he just laid down in it, LOL. The water was disgusting but I just let him since he obviously was REALLY hot. The Rottie also was REALLY slow moving so we only did one circle around the pond whereas usually we do 3. I just could tell they couldn't take anymore (and neither could I!!!) So I left Jackson at home yesterday. I've rarely seen him just completely stop like that on a walk. He is definitely a winter dog. In the summer, the only way he enjoys being outside is if there's water or a pool nearby, or lots of shade.

| ![]() Some people just aren't smart, I was at Kroger and parked beside a vehicle that had 2 dogs in the car. The windows were halfway down. Fortunately the owners were putting the groceries in the car right after I parked. I noticed she left a large bowl of water for them. Still I thought it was cruel, someone could have stolen the dogs or let them out of the car.The dogs were a Jack Russell terrier and a mixed breed. It was 86 degrees outside at 10 am this morning.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | ![]() We have crate fans for the dogs when we travel on hot days; also a/c is on in the car. If it is above 80 degree for our black beasties; and we go to a rest stop, one of us stays at the car, with windows open, the other uses the facilities. We stop about every 2hrs, and dogs are walked and given a treat of ice water; but they also have water in their crates when we are going for long drives. When we go camping in southern ontario and the weather forecast is hot, we also bring our portable generator, and we have electric fans we can run.

| ![]() Usually Gizmo goes for walks. However with the heat, I took my bike, put him in the front basket, and just drove around, and he let the wind blow through his hair. Therefore, he got to be social with all the neighbors and I didn't have to worry about him getting too hot. One way my brother's dog gets his exevize outside when it's really hot is my brother will turn on the sprinklers (Mr. Jackson made me think of this) and Mr. Mac will run around and jump through the sprinklers and have a ball, yet keep cool.

As far as hurricane season goes--lets pray real hard that we don't get one this year! I live in fear of them (Ivan was bad for us here in the Gulf Shores area) and I know that the boys would have a very hard time with the heat! | |
