Hey Capt Noonie, the breeder was telling me about taping up the ears as well for them to stand upright. My question is, I know the dog can potentially have ear issues, if they remain floppy does that increase the risk for issues?

I wouldn't really say floppy ears = ear issues all the time, but you do have to be a bit more diligent in keeping the ear canals clean and dry to keep infections from coming up. The reason why floppy eared babies are more prone to it is bc the ear folds over and keeps moisture in. But I did have a foster with upright ears that was prone to ear infections.

If you do want them up, use a shaver and shave the top 1/3 of the ear and tape up the ears. However Uni my yorkie has big ears, we never taped them, and didn't start trimming her ear hair until about 5 months old. Hers stood up on her own. I use tiny scissors, she stays still enough for me, but does not like the sound of the electric buzzer.

And yes, pluck the ear hair. After a bath (use an ear cleaner in the bath) put in ear powder and pluck out hairs a few at a time. Just the ones that grow directly out of the canal. Don't pluck when he is dirty, you will only be pulling out the hairs to open up holes for infection to go into. Cotton coated pups have more hair in there for the most part than silky pups.

Sounds mean but this is what I do.........I use a good cleaning solution and bought a pair of hemostats. I pluck em out 'against the grain' with those and the ears are always clean and free of moisture.

Of course if you cannot do it, the groomer can

They do get used to it trust me. My poodle doesn't even blink anymore.

When she was about a yr old, she had a nasty ear infection. The vet told me to pluck those hairs and keep em clean. Never had a problem ever since.

LOL @ the urge for a twix now! I think it will be opposite for me now. Sort of like a Twix diet plan. I will never be able to eat one again!
