| Collar vs. Harness? (and need barking tips) Hey everyone: I wanted to find out if y'all prefer collars for your babies, or harnesses? My little girl is going through a (loud!) barky phase, and she pulls and jerks on the leash when she sees a car, person, child... oh, pretty much anything... and I worry about her hurting her neck, and I wanted to see if y'all use harnesses, and if you recommend them. Thanks! ~Jenn P.S. Any tips on the barking would be great too! Distractions don't work (pennies in a can, water bottle, even the high-pitched beepers) ... she's a sweet girl, but I haven't learned how to convince her that she's safe and doesn't need to bark at everything. |

| Harness. There are ways to stop the barking, an obedience class with a good trainer that works with small dogs. |

| I recommend harnesses when taking your furbaby out for walks. Yorkies are prone to collapsed tracheas so PLEASE don't attach a leash to a collar. There are some people who attach ID tags to collars but I personally don't use collars at all. I only use harnesses and only have them on for walks - when they're inside, my babies are naked.

| In my opinion - only harnesses.....I am so afraid of them pulling out of a collar, and I too am watchful of their throats. I also take the harnesses off when we are in the house - I find they 'tat' under their front legs from the harness. I have a pink harness/leash set for Miss Lizzie and a blue one for Mr. Darcy!! - don't ya just love our furbabies!!!!

| Also.....about the barking - Darcy doesn't bark when we are walking - but - the minute we get outside, Lizzie runs back and forth in front of me - barking, barking - she slowly stops as the walk continues - but I can't get her to stop at the beginning of every walk...

| When walking Callie on the leash I use a harness but she wears a collar all the time with her rabies tag on it and her name tag. I never hook the leash to her collar.

| Princess wears a harness. I started her out with a collar before I knew better & she taught me to change as she was pulling to the point of choking herself. Now if she does pull I don't have to worry so much.

| I've been working on Harley's barking cause he barks at birds, leaves, runners, large dogs and growls at children. SO.... the problem actually started for me at obedience classes so I had the instructor to help. Form a body block infront of what ever they are barking at. Do not let them go forward unless they stop barking (ie your first walk doing this could not go very far). Forward movement is a reward for them. Have a ton of rewards with you either a favorite toy or food in tiny pieces and reward every time a stressor goes by that she doesn't bark.... in class I'd have Harley lie on his mat and if he even twitched an ear at the big dogs without taking off I'd give him a treat. Then eventually work to waiting for him to look at the dogs, and now when we're up walking by. It is key to not distract them from the object, but to reward them for looking at it without throwing a fit. The only thing I don't follow this method for is children cause Harley is scared of them, I simply pick him up. It's key to make sure you know that anything can be a reward for a dog, so if you are giving them attention when they bark they may find that rewarding, if you let them pull and keep walking they may never learn to heel. If you shout or wave your hands, they may think it's a game so think long and hard about what they get as a reward for barking and stop doing it. that way you'll decrease the likelihood of the behavior getting worse. Hope that helps, also HARNESS all the time, I don't even clip his tags on him cause he's microchipped I have his tags on my key ring I know of a small dog that got his tags stuck on his neck and almost slit his throat with a collar... so they scare me. I only use a collar for decoration during photo shoots.

| Harness all the way! I prefer the "step in" harness. |
