Sabrina is two. I got her almost four months ago. She is a total mess in the car. I thought she would have calmed down by now. (she probably wasn't exposed much to a car before I got her) She doesn't want to get in, then shakes and pants(she gets me wet!) the entire car ride.She sits on my lap, i have tried to move her to the passanger seat or the back, no luck. Any ideas? help!

My pom was like that until I put her in a crate next to me in the front seat and she is much better and safer.

Maybe give her something to chew on when shes in the car. My female pants like that when shes in the car and it is followed by foaming at the mouth or vomiting. She hasnt gotten any better about it as shes gotten older either.

make it that shes able to see out the window, maybe she get car sick...

My Nikko gets carsick every time we go out for a ride. Its not so much that he is nervous, I just think he makes himself sick. I sit him on my lap up front but that doesn't seem to ease him. He doesn't seem to want to stay still. I try to make him comfortable but to no avail. He always vomits at least 3 times. I have started placing a wee wee pad on my lap and take plenty of paper towels and plastic bags with me. The first time we ever traveled I arrived at my mom's house 45 minutes later reeking of doggy vomit!!

She hates her crate, I'm still working on that one. She is high up enough to see out and I think that may even scare her more! I just purchased a lookout carseat. It should be coming soon. She refused to stay in the last one I tried. She doesn't vomit so I don't think she is carsick just afraid!!!

I think it is just all of the noise that is freaking her out. The vibrations from the car. The noises from the windows/radio.

My Yorkie was a bit afraid when he first was in cars. He would sit in the back seat, curled up in a ball. Now, he LOVES looking out windows and will try everything to get us to roll down a window. My Maltese can't see out windows, but she seems to like car rides.

My best suggestion, would be to have your Yorkie on your lap (I know this is somewhat dangerous) or some place nearby...and you constantly comforting them by petting them and saying they are doing a good job. Positive reinforcement will work over time.

This is what I would try. I'd take her to quiet places to start with...like a slow drive on a country road that had little or no traffic where you could roll the window down and drive really slowly so that she might have the opportunity to enjoy it and stop and take her for a short, leisurely walk. Another place would be a quiet park where you could drive through slowly with your window down and you could stop and take her for a little walk. What she needs to learn is to associate going in the car with something pleasant to her and something she looks forward to rather than something she dreads. Once you show her repeatedly that it can sometimes be to fun places then she will look forward to always going with you.

Teddy is a great rider but he did have the issue where he
thought he needed to sit smack on top of me. I also just
bought the Look out car seat this weekend at the world
agility trials event and I was sure he was going to hate it
but to my surprise he loves it. I think having his own space
where he can sit, lie and look around really helps and is
definitely a lot safer. Good luck with your little one!

She is afraid of the noise and vibrations. I often turn off the radio. I live in San Diego and we are on the freeway often, on the way to work.(she comes with me).

Rosi is that way also, and she is allmost 8 mo. old, she goes wherever i go and been riding in Truck for 6 mo. All i can tell you she is getting better all the time. Bought her a carseat yesterday, gonna try it tomorro. The only thing is , she loves hanging her face out the window ! When she sees when we are on the highway she lays down and sleep.

Sabrina is not getting any better. She doesn't want to get in the car! She gets even more afraid if I open the window.

Unfortunately some dogs just never get used to or never like riding in the car. My aunt and uncle had a poodle who would pant and pace in the car - all the time. They traveled extensively for many years and it never got any better. The only thing they could do was give her a sedative to help her sleep during the ride. I'm not saying your baby won't get used to the car, I'm just saying that sometimes they don't.
