| Scared to let go I don't know if I'm being overprotective, but when I take Boobie out (either on a walk or to the park) I'm scared to take her off of her leash. I know she wants to run & let loose so I'll run with her while she's on the leash. I'm scared if I let her go she'll run off or a big dog will get her. Am I being crazy? |

| I don't think you're being crazy or overprotective - I think you are being safe. Levi is only allowed off-leash outside when we are in a safely fenced-in area, like a backyard or the small dog park. I am obsessive and check fences for gaps too. I don't like to take chances with my little man! |

| I would never let mine off leash unless we are in a fenced in yard or dog park- I think that is being responsible not overprotective.

| Not overprotective at all. I call it smart and intuitive. You never know when the canine mentality will kick in and no amount of firm commands will break through it....and off they go.

| Can you find a fenced in area to play? Is there a dog park in your area or do you have a friend with a fenced in yard? Mine do love getting to run free and play when we get a chance to go to the dog park!

| I usually take her to the park down the block from my house but its not a dog park. I need to look online and see if there are any dog parks in my area. Thanks for the suggestions. |

| To me an off leash dog lthat is anything like my Tibbe is a dog at risk. Tibbe is like a small, hairy JRT and very prey driven, all terrier and loves the chase. Tibbe is only off leash out of our back yard when I am training him not to dash off our front yard property. He was a door-dasher when I got him and would have run out the door and off to Lord-knows-where so I had to train him not to door-dash and am training not to leave our front yard. It is a slow process but we work on it fairly frequently and in the almost 3 years I have had him, he has yet to leave the front yard. I don't trust him though as I know the sight of a cat could undo all the training so we keep the sessions very short and in the middle of the afternoon when less people are around. He's got a very good recall instinct and he knows I have a high-value treat in my pocket so I have that going for me, too. But I would not let him off leash off our property for anything as I don't trust a canine with Tibbe's wilder instincts at all!

Why is it you would even think about having her off-leash on a walk or in a park? Are these in areas where there is no leash law? Maybe it's just where I live, but there is a leash law on my Township's Ordinance. I'd be seriously worried that if my dog was off-leash and approached a person or person's child, that she might be harmed or maced. I wouldn't think of letting her off-leash other than on fenced-in private property or a dog park where it was allowed.

| Well I see people walk their dogs on my block without a leash, but I meant more in the park where we can play catch & different games. |

| Andy is never off leash except in his own yard (fenced in ) there are to many risks out there. I'm just not comfortable about it

| Yorkies being terriers usually do run off if given the chance. Mine is never off leash unless we are inside a fenced yard.

| Lucy's not a 'runner' but there are so many unleashed big dogs in our parks - that I don't dare let her off leash. She can run free in our fenced back yard. My Westie - forget it. I wouldn't see him for DAYS if I let him off leash in a park. Might never see him again. So he's not off leash either - cept in the fenced yard. So you are not overprotective! You're smart.
