I used to use a carseat , But I feel more comfortable using a crate for my stinkers to travel in. I have never had issues with the wire crates getting hot. I use them in the summer and in the winter time I use the plastic crates. I also put a piece of non slip matting that you use for cupboards and drawers in the bottom of the crate so the bedding inside doesn't slip around

I think if I had a smaller dog I'd definitely get a car seat that had some sort of attachment for your dog (so he/she doesn't go flying if something happens). I am not a fan of crates (plastic or wire) in cars just because they are bulky and annoying to move around, for me.

I do the same harness + seat belt. My little ones and I share a hatred toward cages, so we don't use those. I have seen some raised car seats for them that are not only gorgeous, but look very safe and sturdy. I have a few car seats that I've tried out, but my babies have grown out of them or disliked from the get-go.
Make sure it's sturdy and safe I bought one of those that have a mesh, you strap to the seat and it's about 5" off the bottom of the seat----worst thing I ever bought

In the middle of the expressway, Nini jumped off it and was almost strangled by one of the cords holding the thing up I had to pull to the curve and free her, I was so angry that I wanted to throw the darn thing out the window. I came to my senses and didn't litter-bug, but I was soooooo tempted

Right now, I have a hammock style seat cover that we use in the back seat of our pickup truck. We never travel more than a few miles with the furbutts, and this works for all of us at the moment. Connor has a terrible habit of chewing any harness used for travel restraint, and Neo is a Houdini that seems to be able to escape any kind of travel harness made! If we put them in travel crates the noise alone might cause an accident, or if we're at a traffic light somebody may think a child is being abused in the truck! So far, this hammock has worked beautifully!

Roxie gets a little nervous in the car, and I think putting her in a crate/carrier would make her flip out. It took us over a year to get her to sit in the car without barking her brains out for the entire ride. Her previous owners used to let her ride in their laps, so she wasn't used to having to be restrained in the car.

I had the Booster seat...Nini outgrew it. So it's in the basement last time I saw it
