car seat or crate hi I was just wondering if a car seat or a crate is better for traveling with a yorkie? |
What kind of traveling are you doing? I actually like harnesses + seat belt attachment for shorter trips, but my dog is 11lbs and not teeny tiny! I think if I had a smaller dog I'd definitely get a car seat that had some sort of attachment for your dog (so he/she doesn't go flying if something happens). The plus side of a car seat is that usually they are raised, so your pup can still see out the window! I am not a fan of crates (plastic or wire) in cars just because they are bulky and annoying to move around, for me. |
Personally, I prefer to travel with mine in a sturdy travel bag. I use a sturdi-bag belted into the car for safety. If you had an accident and were unconscious and the dog was scared or hurt, you have no idea how they would react, they might get very snappy. If a policeman, emergency worker, or anyone can easily lift them out of the car bag and all, you have the best chance of them getting to a place of safety. |
Both of mine are crated in the car. I just started them as puppies and that's what we've always done. Now when we're getting ready to go somewhere I just get out their crates and they hop in on their own. At this point I don't think they'd be comfortable in the car without them. |
Both! I use a carseat for short trips around town because ZoE likes to look out. On long trips across the state to visit my kids, I put her in her crate because she sleeps then. |
Crate!!...I just feel its safer.:) |
I like carseats so does Callie. We tried a crate when Callie was a puppy but she would throw up and I couldn't see her easily make sure she was ok and hadnt thrown up. When using a crate I would be worried that if you had to slam on your brakes that they could smack against the front of the crate. |
I have mine in a carseat and they are tethered in. Hot Rod used to get carsick being in a crate. |
I use a crate for Taycie. She gets nervous on the freeway, I am not exactly sure why, but a crate works the best for us. I cover the crate with a blanket so she can't see out and she will immedietly calm down and go to sleep. If we are just driving around town she is ok, but the freeway driving stresses her too much. I still want to get a Snoozer Carset for the quick trips around town. Someday.. |
We don't take long car trips so Tibbe is put in a small airline type carrier with a see-through door, small holes all over it and windows in the sides with a slot that the seatbelt goes through. Since he is encased in this hard carrier with its little fuzzy rug and his blankie, I can travel with him in the seat beside me since my vehicle has no back seat and I don't have to worry about the airbag breaking his neck so much. |
I have this in my car, except I keep the legs folded in because they are really not sturdy. Top Paw™ Booster Seat - Sale Category - PetSmart DBF has this in his car, which she does really well with. PawRider Pet Seat Belt Adapter Roxie gets a little nervous in the car, and I think putting her in a crate/carrier would make her flip out. It took us over a year to get her to sit in the car without barking her brains out for the entire ride. Her previous owners used to let her ride in their laps, so she wasn't used to having to be restrained in the car. |
Cali rides in a car seat with a tether attached to a vest on both long and short trips. The car seat she uses has a heated cushion that plugs into the cigarette lighter because it gets really cold in the winter here. She loves the warm seat! And...is securely hooked in and high enough to be able to see out. She has made some really long trips - Kentucky to Montana - and did great! But, she has been using this most of her life. |
We have both a booster and a travel bag. We really only use the travel bag though. We use the Sherpa one. The crates are too hot in the car. The wire (hot) burns the pups and the plastic ones don't let enough cool air in. |
We use a Snoozer car seat. Levi goes with me almost everywhere, even on long trips, and loves his seat. Seat is buckled in the back and he is safely harnessed/tethered into the seat. He likes to look out the window and curl up for a nap. Car seat has worked best for us. |
We have a Snoozer medium car seat for Foxy and its used in the backseat, and she seems to do just fine. |
