| garlic and onions Please forgive me, I am computer illiterit, or I just can't find what I am looking for. I haven't brought my Archie home yet, he is just 5 1/2 weeks old and while we are preparing I thought I would like to make him his puppy treats. I've read that onions and garlic are no-no's, but so many recipes have garlic powder. Is this different or should I stay away from it? I won't be making anything for a while yet b/c I want them to be fresh, so any advice would be appreciated. |

| Hi and welcome to YT. I have wondered about this as well. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will come on and help answer this.

| I wouldn't give it to a tiny puppy. It probably wouldn't hurt on an occasional basis to give it to a bigger yorkie. I would just make the recipe without it, and that is only if your breeder thinks the treats would be ok for a new puppy. Perhaps most revealing is the study published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research in November 2000. Four dogs were given measured amounts of garlic and four dogs received none. After only seven days, blood tests on the dogs taking garlic revealed decreased levels in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell values. Heinz body formation, an increase in erythrocyte-reduced glutathione concentration, and eccentrocytes were also detected, although none of the dogs developed hemolytic anemia. Veterinarians conducting the study concluded that garlic has the potential to cause hemolytic anemia and that food containing garlic should not be given to dogs. I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Onions are a definite no no, the toxicity builds up over time. They say the amount of garlic found in treats is not a problem for most dogs, but after reading yorkieusa's link, I don't think I'd give garlic either. I'd be careful feeding a puppy any new foods. The YTCA recommends that a puppy stay with the mother until it's 12 weeks old. When you bring it home, you need to keep it on the breeder's food for at least a week, so that you can see if any tummy upsets are caused by food changes or something more serious. I gave Joey plain unsweetened Cheerios as a potty training and grooming treat, they didn't cause any problems and most dogs love them.

| Onions are an absolute no. Garlic is, well, questionable at best. Small amounts over time or a large amount one time could pose a problem. I would avoid if at all possible. Red blod cells are too important..

| Cheerios would be great but my Jed HATES them. I found a recipe on here for some "cookies" and he LOVES them. 1 cup of wheat germ 2 jars of chicken flavor baby food. Mix together. Make into little paddies. I bake mine for 15 mintues (I have a hot oven) Cool. Store in the fridge for 2 weeks. I usually only mix up 1/2 a batch at a time. Make cookies that are a little bigger than a quarter, maybe 1/2 dollar size. Then when I give one to Jed, he gets either 1/2 of a cookie up to the whole thing. Only one I have made so far that he will eat! Congratulations on your new furbaby! Good luck with the treats & training. |

♪♥ Jazi & Izi's Mom ♥♫ Donating Member | Our vet recommended Cheerios too but now all of a sudden the girls are sick of them. Can't get them back in the house after potty without something more enticing. They'd rather play with leaves. Too cute tho.

| a breeder friend of mine said nono nono onions, and to be very very very careful with garlic, so if I am making something chickeny or beefy for myself I put a bit aside for Teegy and cook it plain for him |

| Mine love cherrios too. Someone on here mention the baby puffs, I think they are called. I got the blueberry. They are about the size of cherrios and they went crazy over them. Kayla got a piece of onion that fell to the floor about 2 weeks ago and we are just now getting her stools back to normal. She was so sick. She threw up and diaherria. It was awful. SOoooo, yes onions are absolutely a no no. Good luck with your new baby. They are so sweet. |
