| HELP! Rock Star HATES Nutrical but he NEEDS it! Star is uber picky with food. We've tried everything on the market from dry kibble to wet food to the 'raw diet' to actual food-food - but he hardly eats! I know these dogs are prone to hypoglycemia so I add natural 100% honey to whatever he eats but he's the most mellow, lap-dog-type PUPPY I've ever seen...so I figured he needed more food (we leave a bowl of eukaneuba kibble out at all times for him to snack on and we feed him 1/2 can of wet caesar puppy mashed and mixed with the honey 3x daily but he never eats his whole meal - some days he barely eats breakfast and the dry food bowl is emptied once a week (he eats it one kibble at a time - so if we were to count I'd say he MAYBE eats a total of 10 kibble total on a 'good' day?) - so we got nutrical - which other dogs i've owned lapped up like candy but Star HATES it!!! We put it on his nose like it says afer first placing it on my finger, thinking he'd lap it up like every other dog in the world does (lol) but one lick and he shook his head like I'd just fed him a 3 year old GYM SOCK and then BOLTED into my room and under my bed he went. What the hell? What gives??? |

| My first two Yorkie's nearly drove me nuts being so picky and not eating. Once each of them had settled more into the daily routine of their new life, so did their eating. I, like you, kept plying each with bits of food to try to keep hypoglycemia at bay. These dogs can be so frustrating at first - my first Yorkie went 3 days without voluntarily eating a bite and after I'd tried everything, a frozen dinner with turkey meat that I had microwaved for myself turned on his appetite and he scarfed up quite a bit of the turkey meat. From then on, he ate on his own.

| Someone here (I can't remember who, but thank you!) had the idea to sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on the food. I've tried that with Ms. Picky and it has worked like a charm! I've also sprinkled a few bacon bits on it to entice her even more, but do it very rarely as I'm sure they are very high in sodium for a small dog. Also, I don't know if you've already tried it but the pet store gave me a sample of The Honest Kitchen's "Thrive" dehydrated food, it's almost all powder & you can make it into a gravy to put on top or just sprinkle on top as is. I haven't used it since the chz. is working & it doesn't cost $20-$25!

| Have you tried feeding him Natural Balance Rolls. Looks like a sausage roll, you can buy this at Petco. My dogs go nuts over the Potato and Duck. You should try this. |

| Yeah I've had him about 3 months now (he's 6 months old) and the breeder claimed he was already on dry food (he was apx 15 weeks I believe...I'd have to check) - but he won't eat it with me! |

I would recommend getting samples of other foods. Also, giving honey and nutrical consistently may do more harm than good. They are not intended as preventatives, rather they should be used when the pup is actually hypoglycemic. Try obedience and trick training and use kibble as reward. This may entice him to eat more if you make the kibble look highly desirable.

Dogs eat by smell, so if the food does not smell appealing that might be why the issue is with him being picky. Parmesan cheese is a good thing to try. Also, if you are free feeding you are allowing him to eat a little bit at a time contributing to your concern. I do not free feed but instead feed on schedule. How much are you feeding per day? I only feed mine 1/4 cup twice a day and they are all over 10 lbs. So if your little guy is a tiny he really wouldn't need as much food as you might think he does.

| I ONLY feed my two little dogs dry kibble. (Meaning I do not mix wet food, or anything in with their food. They do get healthy treats though) They don't eat MUCH at all. The higher the quality of the food, the less they need to eat is something to keep in mind. My two are VERY picky eaters, and will eat one piece of kibble at a time, well maybe two if I am lucky. I hand feed them daily during training sessions, using their kibble as treats. I am lucky Bella falls for it every time, but Jett seems to know its not his good treats. LOL But he 'follows' his big sister and will eventually take the kibble, just because Bella does. (They are too funny!!!) I would not worry too much about the nutrical. Honey is good, but am wondering if using that often if it would be good for his teeth????? Lots of sweet, sticky stuff. Just a thought!

| My Yorkie is picky too.... aren't they all? however I agree with others, I would try some other brands of food.... I don't know where you are, but is there a store that sells more of the higher end foods? they usually have samples they can give out... I would try Taste of the Wild, Orjen, Natural Balance, Earthborn, Solid Gold, etc.... however IMO,and from experince that Royal Canin works wonders! I know it's not the "best" food on the market but it worked for my yorkie. I tried all kinds of foods (all my other dogs eat FROMM- the yorkie wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole- and i add cheese to it) but the Royal Canin #28 Yorkshire works. I tried every type of food too.... canned, stews, etc.... Also, there's a "newer" food on the market that is refrigerated food, called FreshPet and it's even at Walmart, which is really good. It's either meals in containers or in rolls. Nutro also makes these little meals called natural choice with sliced meat in gravy which my yorkie will also eat. I know it's scary when they don't eat and I know it's not good on their system to change foods all the time.... good luck. I hope you find something that works. Let us know.

Eukanuba small breed puppy 3lb dog at 5-7 months old should be getting 5/8 of a cup a day. so that's a little more then half a cup a day. Cesar puppy (in white tray) - 1/2-2 trays per 5lbs twice a day (assuming 1/2 is for small breeds and 2 is for larger breed puppies) You are giving him 1/2 try of cesar 3x a day plus whatever dry kibble he eats during the day, plus the honey (more sugar). That is too much food for a puppy his size, so of course he isn't going to eat it all. Also at 7 months old he may not want to eat 3 times a day anymore. Mine stopped eating lunch around 5 months old and less then 3lbs. Never had to give her nutracal. I think you are driving yourself crazy here. Take a step back and look at what you are feeding him. It is not good food by any means. Both foods are full of by-products and other questionable ingredients. they could also be the source of his itchiness. If i were you I'd just stop what you were doing and start from scratch. First find a quality dog food for your puppy. Some of the quality foods are for "all life stages" and some have staged food. Wellness has a puppy food, and a small breed food, and can be purchased at petco. Natural Balance, also at petco, has limited ingredient foods for allergies which also might be a good option. Other foods such as taste of the wild, Orijen, Nature's Variety are "ALS" and are usually found in smaller specialty pet shops. Pick a food and stick with it for a while. If he's itching because of a food allergy you may not see results for over a month. It can take up to 3 months for all the crap from the old food to leave his system. Most of the mentioned foods also have a wet food so if you want to feed both wet and dry make sure you are portioning them correctly. You can usually go by the feeding guidelines on the bag, but sometimes you have to feed less or more depending on your particular dog. Also if you really think he needs the nutrical just put it in his mouth. put some on your finger, then open his mouth with your other hand and run your finger along the roof of his mouth to get the nutrical in there. Another note about nutrical (or honey) - too much of this can make them not want to eat because of all the sugar in it. these supplements are only to be given as needed. If your puppy hasn't shown any signs of hypoglycemia then i wouldn't bother giving it to him. it can also cause diarrhea.
