I believe in magical Yorkie power of chicken broth...the thicker with bits of chicken is the better especially for food change overs to a new food...however I have to say..I've never heard of a dog being diagnosed with anorexia...if they get hungry enough they will eat.

Uni had always been a picky eater. She would go the whole day without eating sometimes, and start throwing up yellow foamy bile, a tell tale sign she was hungry, but was still holding out. The thing that changed her overnight was getting her spayed. Best decision I ever made in my entire life. Now mealtimes are no longer a headache or a battle.

Until then, you've gotten a lot of good advice here already. Dogs don't starve themselves, but they are however, really stubborn, esp yorkies. They know they just have to hold out one second longer than you. Are you giving her any treats during the day between meals? Yorkie puppies are so tiny, and their stomachs the size of a golf ball, one or two bites of treats between mealtimes will fill them up and they won't be hungry.

I decided to keep free feeding Trixie so that she can decide when she is hungry. I just changed her food over to wellness super5 small breed mix and she eats it whenever she darn well pleases. I would go crazy with her if I had to only put it out for 10 minutes and then pick it up. That method works for my sister's black lab, but not for my yorkie. Trixie also does not like to eat from her bowl. She digs out her kibble with her paw and throws it all over my kitchen floor, then eats it a piece at a time

Go figure.

I'm not sure that I understand your first question...
But, I don't "let" mine eat twice a day, they just do, on their own.
All Dogs are different, and I think you're trying to enforce "rules"
for your Dog, which she isn't interested in.

There are reasons why one would pick up food, a couple being...
That the Dog eats TOO much, and you have to regulate it's intake, and
To coordinate "Potty Times", for your convenience, where it won't do it inside. (there may be other reasons as well)

If I were you, I'd just leave it out 24/7 for a while...
Observe her schedule for a few days, then you'll be in a better
position to evaluate this.

I free-feed my two furcrazies - dry kibble in their bowls at all times. They're both small so they need to eat more often. They tend to graze throughout the day, but tend to eat more in the evening and in the middle of the night. Right now I'm feeding them Blue Basics turkey and potato and Canidae lamb & rice.

Sometimes they need to be reminded to eat - I give them a teaspoon of plain lowfat yogurt and that usually stimulates their appetite. Almost immediately after their little tast of yogurt, they go straight to their bowls.

I used to "doctor" up their dry kibble - adding cottage cheese, canned dog food, yogurt, anything to get them to eat. I just got tired of having to mix their food all the time and decided to just try plain dry kibble. They ended up liking the plain dry kibble the best. Go figure!

I cant get over it. My babies had their first meal with no fuss. I put the bowls down and they just ate all the food with no leftovers. Cheese really works wonders. Thanks so much.

I used to free feed...then we added some more...the mini schnauzer is convinced (beyond the pup stage even) every meal may be her last and will eat every last kibble from everyone's bowl...having at one point fed Innova I was feeding 4 dogs 3 types of foods and had to watch who ate what...we also saw potty time issues...now we feed Taste of the Wild which eased the everyone eating the same but still have scheduled feeding times.

I hope one day we can free feed here again, but the lil gluten was getting too chubby.

Keep in mind that some yorkies can be prone to pancreatitis. My Uni is, and I can't/don't give her cheese or anything else with excess fat. That was part of the difficulty of trying to get her to eat pre-spay, I couldn't use any of the "bribes" that work for so many other dogs.

Oh that's scary...I'd consider that special needs with food and be sure to give little meals between or whatever it took to prevent this...

I'm dealing with the same thing. Although Kody will eat up RC in a heart beat - but it's not the best brand. I bought Wellness and like others first couple of days couldn't get enough of it - then all of a sudden stopped. I did mix with RC first 7 days. So went out bought more RC and he was fine. So I really want him to like the Wellness so I started back mixing with RC and he eats it fine. More Wellness than RC though.
