| Random question about excess skin Is it just puppies that have this because they grow into it or do they always have excess skin on their bodies that you can actually grab?

| Perhaps I missed something, but I have never noticed anything like that in my life.

| I'm thinking this is what you are meaning....? Or maybe post this in the breeders section if you think you have an issue of something different maybe they know. Technically speaking in not so technical terms...pups have a looser "scruff" of skin on the back of their neck..but sometimes they have some "wrinkles" down their back they quickly grow into...hence mom's carry them by the scruff etc so it's a trait of evolution... Some adult dog's maintain a decent amount of elasticity around the "scruff" back of neck...it is not advisable to hold, pick up etc a dog by the scruff...even though many people do including vets, trainers etc.(especially a Yorkie wit CT issues) the only time you should do so is in an absolute emergency as many dogs do not have the elasticity they did as a pup, it can hurt them. Personally speaking I grabbed my BF's dog by the scruff in an emergency...she went for the neighbor's cat-I didn't see it in our yard so it was unexpected...she would not have stopped...she yelped, I was able to get her under the front legs after that and wrestle her back into the house (she was a very large Amer. Staff) she was obviously in pain over my having grabbed her scruff...she wasn't horrible or unsocial with other animals BTW she never hurt a cat but she had rolled and terrified many in the back yard only and it was more than unpleasant to watch-my fear was some cat might have been brave enough to swipe her and I wasn't sure what she'd do...

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | yes most dogs have "extra" skin that you can grab unless they are extremely overweight. The scruff is the area with the most skin. Scruffing them does not hurt. The AmStaff was more likely startled or it hurt because she was off running and you pulled her back. Mother dogs pick puppies up by the scruff and it has a calming effect on them.

| thanks thats exactly what i meant, should have said scruff, he does have most around his neck but he has some along his backside as well which i see he'll be growing more into? I've never picked him up by the scruff but when ive pet him ive been able to grab it gently because i wanted to know how much there was

| Pups often have a wrinkle of skin above their bottom/tail that I have seen...in all breeds...they grow into it. Quote:

| You should take a pic and post it in the breeders section as they are more informed as to medical things and seeing pups...

| He's so cute! Look at that tail all curled up! I've no idea if it's a normal amount of skin, but I can say as long as it doesn't stay "pinched" he's not dehydrated...maybe he'll just grow into it, rolley-polley dogs are always cute too IMO Really hope someone who knows can answer for you...did you ever ask your vet about it?
