| Kicking back feet up after going potty My mom and dad come over with there yorkie Sammy at least once a week sense they rescued him in October plus we all took a trip together to WV last November. Well we have a pretty good sized fenced backyard and Callie and Sammy love to be out there when its not freezing and Sammy does what we laugh and call the moon walk every time he pees or goes poo, he kicks his back feet up but like moves backwards when he does it (the funniest thing to watch). So I watched Callie from the glass door when she went outside to go potty this morning and after she pooed there she went kicking up her back feet lol. I figure Callie is doing it now after watching Sammy do it so I was wondering why do some dogs do this?

| I honestly thought it was a MALE thing (my two boys do it) I also noticed they do the "strut" when they pee in yards that have male dogs -- It is funny to watch

| I always thought it was a dog's attempt to cover up his "mess"...All three of mine do this (2 girls and a boy), but not every single time...It's like, first thing in the morning, when they're barely awake, they don't seem to do this, but when they're all awake and playful, they do...I swear Buzz, the boy, comes running in to a certain blanket, when his feet are wet and kicks all four paws to dry them...He doesn't do this, in the house, unless his feet are wet...So who knows lol... |

| Not sure this is the same but Elvis obsessively wipes his feet after he pottiest, like maybe once he stepped in his own pooh! He goes forward though. We mock his "OCD" with being clean all the time though...he often will stay squatted and walk like maybe he's not sure he's done or fears a- eeeeewwwwww-hangie-pooh...it is kind of hilarious...he then prances all carefully back to "clean" spot like the patio out of the icky grass & dirt-maybe jumping onto a tree stump not yet removed or the kid's yard furniture if one of the other dog's comes near-they might get him dirty...yes we're mean we make fun of him You should try to catch a video...would love to see if it's the same! |

| I believe this is scratching-off and dogs do it to kick up or spread their scent.

| My little girl does this too. She does it after she pees or poops sometimes but she also does is when she wants something- like a toy that her brother has, a treat, or her dinner a little faster than Mommy is fixing it. It's almost like she's having a little temper tantrum. She will kick back and stomp her feet and whine or bark a little. It's so cute that it usually gets her what she wants so I'm sure that's why she keeps doing it. |

| Its a show of dominance...Dogs have scent glands in there feet so when they "moonwalk" they are releasing them...Males and Females do it.

He's being passive aggressive I guess! They are using their feet to spread scent from their anal gland or urine...but I'm going to stick with we all have cute little cleanly babies who wipe their feet... I tons of links saying there are glands in feet but it was all by Yorkie owners-and the links by vets and a like said it was from anal glands and urine...so if someone else wants to post a link of a reliable source I'm going to shush...actually two of the four links I found were YT! | |

| Dogs have scent glands in their feet (both between their toes, interdigital glands, and on their pads, merocrine glands) so it is thought that this backward scratching helps leave additional scent in the area where the dog has either defecated (pooed) or urinated (wee). Both males and females carry out this behaviour but it is much more prevalent in males, especially undesexed males. Some dogs also scratch after smelling another dogs faeces without having gone themselves. They may be trying to over-mark the other dogs elimination to put their own scent there instead. Some dogs are more territorial than others. Dogs that are more territorial are more likely to scratch up the dirt. Also, dogs that feel more territorially threatened (such as when a new dog is introduced into their territory) are more likely to perform this behaviour. When they do not feel the need to mark their territory dogs are less likely to scratch.

| Apparently this is why when a dog is overheating rubbing alcohol is applied to the paws to cool the dog faster-the alcohol opens the glands more and cleans anything possibly blocking them! Two dogs answers page 6 "Yes, they do. Dogs have 2 types of sweat glands. The first type is called merocrine glands. These are located in the foot pads of dogs (and cats) and function to help cool the animal. The second type is called apocrine glands. These are located on most of the rest of the dog (and cat) but they do not function to cool the animal. Their purpose is to release pheromones." Thanks Bella baby08! I couldn't find anything about it verifying (just for my own knowledge) until you posted the name of the glands! Then a ton of links popped up. Good thing to know. |
