Apparently this is why when a dog is overheating rubbing alcohol is applied to the paws to cool the dog faster-the alcohol opens the glands more and cleans anything possibly blocking them!

"Yes, they do. Dogs have 2 types of sweat glands. The first type is called merocrine glands. These are located in the foot pads of dogs (and cats) and function to help cool the animal. The second type is called apocrine glands. These are located on most of the rest of the dog (and cat) but they do not function to cool the animal. Their purpose is to release pheromones."

Thanks Bella baby08! I couldn't find anything about it verifying (just for my own knowledge) until you posted the name of the glands! Then a ton of links popped up. Good thing to know.
