| Playing Tug of War Macy's favorite game is tug of war with her Skiny or a sock. She shakes her head so violently with whatever she has in her mouth it gives me a headache watching her. She'll bring the toy over to me and want me to pull on it while she pulls on her end. She really loves it when I shake it back and forth a little but she acts like she wants me to play as hard as she does with shaking the toy. I've tried just holding onto the toy and letting her pull but she loves me shaking it while she is pulling on it. Does anyone else have this dilema?

| My boys love tug of war too. I shake the toy gently or hold on tight when he wants to pull. Our games look rough, but they aren't really, which is why I don't allow anyone else to do this with my boys. Max is really funny when I lose my grip, he brings the toy back to me to start again.

| Shaking the toy is instinctual. They are trying to break the neck of what they have caught. They all do that.

| When I go to puppy/agility class I spend half the class rewarding him with tug of war instead of food. If you have a suitable toy, and know your dog, you can play pretty "rough" without hurting him. Harley has learned to follow my hand, so it looks like I'm tugging on him, but I'm really only guiding him around the floor with the toy. I've also taught him to play growl when we play tug. Just make sure if you start playing tug that you have a good "drop it" cue. A tug game should be completely controlled by you, and the dog should only "win" a few times, so that you don't teach the dog a fun game of take the toy and get chased. in case the dog was ever to pick up something they can't tug. For Harley some days it is a better attention getter than food. I've been using tugs to teach him heel, etc.

Not sure if any of that makes sense, I'm on "spring break" and it's turned more into "spring workaholic" ie... I'm swamped and exhausted. lol

| My Sammie bear does the same thing, sometimes he'll pull back but mostly he wants me to shake the toy. It's the cutest thing in the world. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I've played T.O.W. with both of mine, and MY Female Becca plays rougher than my Male Sneakers ever did. She's got a Whip that will make you hold the pull-toy with both hands at times. I do other things when we play like that, like reach around to their sides, and sorta pinch them lightly, like they were getting bitten. They've learned to be very aware of their surroundings like that, and doge away quickly when they see the approach. We also do body pushes, where I put my arm up against them, and push them to the side, and they push back hard. Both of mine are rather large for the Breed. Male is a 10+lb at 2 yo, and Female is 6+lb at 6 mo. I've never thought of them as Fragile or Designer types, and treat them accordingly. Both are rough and tumble in the yard with each other, and are really GREAT little watch dogs, which is their main task for me. I love um to death, give them everything they need and just about anything they want, except for pampering.
