| New member Hello good people, how are you all doing? I am fantastic. I love these forums. I frequent more the car forums than I do the animal forums, but that is going to change now. What a mix huh? Car fix it forums and the yorkie forum - I love it. I have a two year old male purebred yorkie named Bandit. We love so many things about him, but I think we have done a terrible job of training him - we think. We have had him since he was ready to leave mother. He gets so dang aggressive and protective when someone walks in the room and he is cuddled up to me or my wife. It as if there is a switch that turns on and he growls and is ready to attack, but then if he is down off the bed he wags his tail and loves them. He doesnt mind very well when we tell him to come, but I think that is a lack of training and working with him. The aggressive behavior is the most conerning now. I hope it is not too late to work with him and teach him to get past that, but we are not sure what we can do. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Hello, and welcome to Yorkie Talk! You will find lots of information that will help you and Bandit enjoy each other more. I'm just now beginning to train my 6-month old handful, so I can't offer advice, except to perhaps search the training forum for keywords such as aggression. You can train the dog yourself - there are all kinds of books and websites with info, but I'm taking Tallulah to private classes and then we will attend group classes. In my mind, the classes are mostly about me learning to work with her and also keeping us on a training schedule. If I didn't have the pressure of knowing that our progress is being monitored, I would tend to put off the homework in favor of just playing. |

| Petsmart offers puppy training classes in your area. You might check into that. There are also other training classes there. Welcome to YT.

| Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk. I agree, it is never too late to work on behavior issues. Just wondering if you have ever had a chance to watch the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic? Not everyone likes the show, but I do think there are some good ideas for working with dog aggression. Or you can always hire a trainer, if you think the problem is beyond what you can manage alone. Anyway, glad you are here and I think you will find a bunch of information on all kinds of topics.

| Hi and Welcome! Aggressive behavior should be stopped. A great training technique is to get 2-3 friends to come in for about an hour for 3-4 days starting off; and when they come in have them greet you and your pup by name, and then have them give the pup a treat. Start off slowly by throwing the treat on the ground or placing it at a corner of the couch for the pup to come get, so that your pup will not feel encroached upon. Do this for about a week and then continue the treats for about another week and then start eliminating the treats gradually. Before you know it the pup will come to see that new guests are a "good" thing and nothing to become aggressive over. Positive reinforcement and training has always worked for me. Best of luck, keep us updated on your pup! |
