As others have stated, a 6 month guarantee is not the norm, and a $100 deposit is low for most good breeders.

A 4 hour drive is long, but it is nothing compared to ending up with a sick puppy, the heartbreak, the trips to the vet, and the expenses.

Some very bad breeders can look and sound pretty good on their websites and in email. There is a puppymill near my home that has a beautiful website featuring gorgeous pictures of their historic house sitting on acres of rolling green hills. The Yorkies pictured look fabulous. After a little research, I found that these people breed many different kinds of dogs and have hundreds of dogs in their kennels on the property. They are USDA approved, but they are the last place anyone would want to buy a Yorkie.

Research thoroughly and don't be in a hurry. If you put down a $100 deposit and drive the 4 hours to pick up the pup in a few weeks, you are likely to be so excited that you will turn a blind eye to anything negative that you see. You probably will not emotionally be able to say no to the pup no matter what you find.

I completely understand. and honestly the deposit is the least of my worries. In your opinion do you feel if she was not a legit breeder she would invite me into her home to let me see where she raises her dogs/ puppies and also not expect the money upfront??

I see no reason why you couldn't post her website. She obviously has a website so people can find her on the net. I can understand not wanting to post the personal info - e-mail address and phone number, but there should be no problem in providing the website.

It really is hard to form an opinion without knowing more about the breeder. And what kind of a health guarantee is she giving? If you see some of the health guarantees that are out there, they are not really any guarantee at all.

Yes, breeders of all kinds, good and bad, will happily invite you to their home. There are many bad breeders who don't care what you see when you arrive. Some are oblivious to what they are doing wrong, and others are counting on you being so excited about getting your pup that you will rationalize all of the red flags and you won't turn around.

The best way to determine if this person is legitimate and that your pup is healthy is to research the name of the breeder and visit before you commit to purchasing.

I would want more than a 6 month health guarantee, and I would read the guarantee carefully. Some aren't worth the paper they are written on. More importantly, I would want evidence that breeder is someone who stands behind her pups and will be there for phone calls/email for questions and assistance if necessary.

I would really suggest you post the link to her website so we can research her for you. There are lots of resources to check, USDA (puppymill) list, AKC suspension list, Rip Off Report, Better Business Bureau, etc. plus since YT is so large, some of our members may know this breeder.

This puppy will be a member of your family for hopefully the next 15 years. The breeder you get it from is a very important decision.

Nick, you stated in your other thread that the woman breeds other kinds of dogs. That is very worrisome.

If you don't want to post the breeder's name and website openly, private message a couple people here and have them help you do some research.

It would be helpful if you would give her name and website so others can tell you if they have had any experience with her.

If she is a good breeder she should welcome the comments, if she is not then others should be told.

Not saying this particular breeder would do this, but many nonreputable breeders will say all the right things, invite you to see the dogs in their home & then count on the fact that most people are so excited & so in love with a pup that they dismiss any negative conditions. My advice remains the same as I stated in your other post...visit her home first, "interview" her, evaluate her dogs & then decide if she's the breeder for you. Good luck!

Her breeding more than Yorkies would make me turn the other way.

I agree with what has been said. a 4 hour drive is long but it is true that you don't want to take home a puppy that will be sickly, the heart ache will be longer than the drive.
Try to take the drive or PM the others who are more experience the breeder's info.
