Is he yorkie? I am in a difficult position. I've just recieved what I was told is around a 2 year old male Yorkie. But he's close to 17 pounds. Any suggestions??? |
Where did you get him from? Do you have pictures of him? Does he look like a Yorkie (except size)? Could he be a Yorkie mix? Some Yorkies will be larger due to being bred off-standard. Weight alone does not indicate whether or not he is a Yorkie. Have you taken him to a vet? |
I don't understand what you are asking exactly? You will find many people on here with larger yorkies. My biggest one is about 13 lbs., yes she is over standard size, but is AKC registered and looks just like my others, just lots bigger. |
Harley (as my two year has named him) was left on a coworkers doorstep on New Years Eve. She could not afford another mouth to feed so we decided that we would take him. As of yet I do not have pictures. He looks identical to every picture I have seen of yorkie and the vet says he is yorkie. The only difference is that his tail is huge and his weight. My aunt has a yorkie that is 2 years old and weighs just under three pounds. I'm just trying to find out if there has been maybe a larger size of yorkie or if they can get bigger than the standard 8 pounds as listed on wikipedia. |
Welcome. I have read here about people having yorkies of different sizes. I would ask your vet if he is at a healthy weight. If he is at a healthy weight you just have a big boned yorkie or maybe a mix. My yorkie is small boned and sometimes I wish he was a bit bigger boned. His girlfriend weighs more and is quite the tank when they play so I wish he was a little more solid because I worry about him getting hurt if they roughhouse to much. I think you are wonderful for adding a 2 year old yorkie to your home. He will be a great companion. There just will be more to love. |
It's very possible he is a mix also, since you really don't know his background. If you have a two year old, he seems like a perfect size. :D |
1 Attachment(s) gino my new teapot, is massive in this photo he is just turned 6months and he is so heavy and has a massive tail, he is full yorkie, the one he is with my beau at 4 years, he is getting neutered at end off month, so i will know what weight he is, gorgeous and very healthy , a beautiful boy |
Also I just saw a post that you have a two year old. I my opinion I think it would be better to have a slightly bigger dog with children. The little ones are so delicate your child would have to be more careful when playing with the yorkie. |
Welcome to YT :) My Kermit is 12.5 lbs. If your family has decided to give this dog a wonderful home, I don't understand where the conflict comes from. If he is full yorkie... great and if not..... great. More dog to love on !! I think it's a win win :D :D |
See I've spoken with my aunt and she was jsut as confused as I. Being as hers isn't even three pounds and yet my Harley is close to 17 pounds its a bit confusing to say the least. I have no doubt at all that he is at least part yorkie. And I could care less if he is purebred or not. I was raised with mutts and rescue dogs so pedigree is not a neccessity to me. Whomever owned him last took good care of him. Other than having a bit of dry skin and a little on the hypoglycemic side, Harley is in perfect health. But the vet has assured me that with the correct feeding, exercise and bathing he'll be just fine. (keep in mind I've never had a dog that weighed less than 75 pounds do this is all very new to me) any advice on a new yorkie(ish) parent is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone |
Bailie Love your picture....... It's as if they are saying oh God.... mom's got the camera again...... Ok I'll smile but only once !!! |

Buster Brown, Thanks for your concern. My children love him already. My two year old named him and he sleeps with her in her bed(he has actually become her dog) and my one year old honestly could care less if he were there or not. He just ignores him unless he is barking or something like that. And Harley can Yapp |
Hi, I noticed you're from my neck of the woods. I'm from Sweet Springs. |
I think 17 pounds is on the very large yorkie size but I'm sure it's possible. My 7 month old is about 12 pounds so I imagine he'll end up weighing even more at full growth. I'd love to see a photo of Harley. Quote:

I will definately have to get on the picture taking tonight then! |

Welcome to YT :aimeeyork Yes Yorkies can get a lot bigger than the standard 7 lbs...My girl is 9.6 lbs I have a friend and her Yorkie is 10 lbs and there are a few YT members who have 15 lb Yorkies all full blooded...AKC standard for a yorkie is not to exceed 7 lbs...all good breeders try to breed to standard but sometimes you get one thats not standard...Back Yard Breeders will breed a 9 to 10 lb bitch and thats where you get the larger yorkies cause they don't breed to standard. Hope this helped answer your question.:) |
I know, he's like the next Shaquile Oniel Canine..LOL |
thanks everyone for all of your help. Now onto my next question, I've never done the small dog thing before. None of my previous dogs weighed less than 75 lbs. I don't know of really anything different I should do with Harley. Any suggestions? |

Welcome to YT. I've got a 12.5 pound boy myself. I think Jackson (Britster's dog) is 15. The AKC standard says not to exceed 7 pounds, but they are still all Yorkie, just supersized :D. The biggest thing to keep in mind with a smaller dog is that they still have a high nutrient need, but smaller stomachs. Feed the best quality food your guy will eat. These guys are highly energetic. They are also more prone to certain things such as dental problems. Spend some time around here and you will learn a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures. |

See I had no idea what to get for food. We've always used Ol'roy Premium Nutrition with the bigger dogs. But for the first night he acted like he couldn't chew it and the next morning he wouldn't even touch it so we decided to buy him some different food with smaller and softer bites. Of course the time beign RIGHT before I got my check from work I was low on cash from buying all the toys and bedding and the vet bill of course, so we got him this food called Little Bites. I'd never even heard of it before. Is that a good brand or what would you suggest? I seem so novice.... |
I've never heard of Little Bites, but I would generally avoid anything you can get at the grocery store. There is a whole forum section on diet and health Yorkie Health & Diet - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community There are lots of ongoing discussions about different brands and what works for different people. Check out the top sticky on premium brands, there are quite a few companies that will send you free samples while you are trying to figure out what works best. The premium foods may seem more expensive at first, but if you figure in that they generally require a smaller serving size, they work out to be about the same as the other brands. For instance, Pedigree small breed recommends 1 1/4- 1 3/4 cups per day while Blue Buffalo small breed suggests 1/2 cup to 1 1/4 cup per day for the same size dog. In the end though, it comes down to what your dog will eat. Yorkies are also prone to things like pancreatitis. Avoid high fat foods and treats. |

Maybe theyre doppelgangers, lol :D this is my Fido: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5987169_n.jpg I always tie up his hair :) so he can see :P He's the double size of a ''normal'' yorkie, he's 6 kilo's ! He's very muscular, not too fat, just a healthy yorkie, he's 2 years old. His mom is 3,5 kilos , and his dad is about the same (3-4 kilo's), all his brothers and sister are this big too (from 5-8 kilo's), just really big litter. Fido has an overbite, ears down, is too dark colored and has a little bit curly tail (its suppose to be straight, like on a labrador or a pointer, or like an half moon). He's perfect to me , just more to love, and if I go to a walk with a yorkie group , I know straight away what dog is my Fido, cause he's always the biggest :D |

I feed Orijen and Acana right now but if you're looking for something good quality but not quite expensive I'd look into Taste of the Wild (it's grainfree, and very good price, and lots of dogs do very well on this, you can often find it at hardware stores and Tractor Supply's, etc). Merrick makes a food called Whole Earth Farms that's VERY price friendly. Basically I would stay away from anything you can buy at a grocery store, heck even most of the foods at Petsmart are pretty nasty. :) Check out Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings for some generic info, it can lead you in the right direction. Remember that these little guys don't cost a ton a feed anyways, so I feel it's important to find a high quality food. I buy a 5.5lb bag of Acana at $14.99 and it feeds my 15lb'er for about 6 weeks. |
The largest one I have seen personally was 19 lbs of lean terrier. Mine are 12 and 13 lbs, and they are a great size for kids, very sturdy. Yorkies were bred down from larger terriers, so you if you get the right genetics together, you can get a "throw-back" to a larger size.
