Teapot club? I will be adding pictures of my Harley shortly. The husband jsut ran home and took a few for me. Then of course more WILL be added tomorrow. And thanks again everyone for all of your help. Only two problems with these food everyone is telling me about. 1. I've never heard of them and when I type them into a search bar or even get on a website, the closest "store" that sells the brand, is over 50 miles away. and 2. I'm very isolated to where I can go. My town is about 100 miles away from any town worth anything. |

The question is, "Do you love him?" If so, the size won't matter to you. |
I would also like to say that is sounds like Harley got lucky when he found your doorstep. I have what is considered a big Yorkie girl at 8.5 lbs which is fine , she needs some girth to survive around here. Yorkie Talk is a wealth of information about the breed, there are so many helpful members here who will help you with any questions you have. Good Luck and I would love to see a picture of Harley. |

Huddersfield Ben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Reported to be between 9 and 12 lbs...widely acknowledged as the sire of the breed... History of the Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon |
How funny, I just rescued a 1 year old "giant" yorkie as well. You can see him in my avatar or in my albums I think...I need to update some pictures but he is the one shaved down. His previous owner's didn't really care for him they way a yorkie needs to be cared for. Just remember, daily grooming as in brush hair, clean under the eyes if needed, and clean those teeth, if you don't keep his "member" saved down give it a cleaning as well with a dog bath wipe at the end of the day to keep that clean and free of any infection. You also may need to clean poo off from time to time, but keeping them in a sanitary trim will minimize this occurance. Like other posters have said feeding them a great food will keep them healthy which will make them happy. The best food that I've found that can actually be shipped to me is Wellness Small Breed which you can find at PetSmart and both of my pups gobble it right up. I sometimes add half a package of Ceaser to each of their dinners as an extra treat :) Good luck with adjusting yourself and this wonderful pup to your home, he is so lucky to have found his way to you and your family. |
1 Attachment(s) This is Harley. And no, size does not matter. He's loved either way. His previous owners must have taken great care of him. He has no medical issues at this moment other than some dry skin and needing a trim. I'm guessing they kept him pretty well shaved down because he's just got these few little stringy things popping up out of his ears and on his tail. I don't care either way if he's a yorkie or not. He's a part of the family now. My aunt is helping me adjust to the small dog life(which I am not accustomed to AT ALL) and she's giving us some food which her little gal won't touch even tho its high quality stuff. If anyone knows any great groomers around the Saline, Pettis, or Lafeyette Counties in Missouri please let me know. We've got to get him in soon. His nails are tearing up my brand new hard wood floors! |
You can always get the vet to do a nail trim if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, my vet only charges $5 to do them. |
He looks like a Yorkie to me. It's not a common thing but Yorkies can definitely be 17lbs. I get Purina One Lamb 'n Rice. The first ingredient is lamb; you don't want your first ingredient to be anything but meat. And it comes from Walmart! :) |
Right now we've got some Little Bites. It's made by Purina and it only cost me ab out 5 bucks. The first few nights he wouldn't touch it but last night he scarfed it down like he hadn't ate in weeks. So maybe he just got hungry enough to eat it or he was just still getting used to us. I'm not sure. The first ingredient in the Little Bites is Chicken Meal I believe. We'll try these things my aunt is giving us and I've also got some coupons for some free samples of this stuff Nature's Variety and a few others coming in so we'll jsut have to see what works. |
I wouldn't give him a whole bunch of different dog foods. Dog's stomachs are sensitive and can't take a variety of foods w/o getting sick. Just pick the best one and give that to him. |

Third, YT will give you all of the information you'll need to know on your new guy. There are so many, many helpful and knowledgable members, it would be my single piece of advice to you to visit and ask questions regularly. |

Will do. I wouldn't want anything to happen to him so thanks for all the advice. Now, what about cribbing? Has anyone else had this problem? Vinegar doesn't seem to do the trick like it has with our Bull Mastiff (which by the way Harley and Max get along GREAT!). |
I've never heard of it. I looked it up and all I found referred to horses chewing wood? |
Well see, I'm a small town country girl. I call it cribbing if any animal chews on wood. He chews on the legs of my couch and my coffee tables. |
He's a cutey. He does remind me of Jackson. Just go slowly when you are switching foods. Some Yorkies have very sensitive stomachs and will get diarrhea if you go to fast (others have cast iron ones and don't have a problem). Start with about 25% new food in the mix and if he does ok for a couple of days move up to 50% and so on until he's eating only the new stuff. If cribbing means the same as it does with horses, you can try getting something called Bitter Apple spray and putting it on what ever he is chewing on. It doesn't work in all dogs, though. Some actually enjoy the taste. I've also had good luck putting some clear deodorant on my wood work. |
I'll throw this out there and see what comments come along...What about trying bully sticks? I wonder if he still has some baby teeth and perhaps might have an infection? These are just thoughts. As I said, I've never dealt with anything other than puppy chewing and, yes, my puppy liked to chew on wood, sheetrock, you name it! Thank goodness it ended quickly!:) |
See I'm not sure how old Harley is either. I'd assume probably somehwere around 1 1/2 to 2 like the vet said but then again the vet could be wrong |
Hi there and welcome to yt, this goes out to the others more knowldgeable owners, original yorkies were once upon a time a little larger weren't they? about 20 pounds if I'm not mistaken? Soooo then why would any one say that a larger yorkie be mixed? |
I agree Gizmo. But i don't care if he's full blooded or not. Or even is he's got any Yorkie in him for that matter. Either way he is a loved member of our family now.. |

He looks all yorkie to me!! My Samantha weighs 12 pds, her sister who my mom has is 22 pds. The very first yorkie we had was 27 years ago and he weighed 18 pds at his heaviest. 27 years ago when we first got Scruffy our 18 pounder alot of the yorkies back then were larger. Seems like he will be a good fit for your family. Best Wishes:aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa |
Hello, my yorkie is 12.4lbs boy and my girl is 11.2lbs. We just had a litter of puppies almost 5 weeks ago and I know that they were born with long tails. It is a preference as per the vet to have their tails docked and the claw out or not. Both, of my yorkies have short tail and I have seen many with long tails. I am new to this as my Kalix is the boy is the 12.4 lbs I raised since 8wks and he was only suppose to be no more than 5lbs. So I guess anything can happen. I just love him to death and he and my girl Lexi we rescued as well last Oct and is a ball of fun. This was my first dog ever in my life. I always wanted a little yorkie, but I would not trade either of my babies in, the bigger they are the more fun and rough housing you can do with them. I was not prepared to take on another dog either, but I know she had a rough 2 yrs in a cage filled with nasty and it's sad. She is the most loving dog and has had all the love and care she could ask for and they sure appreciate it and express their love. Good luck and what you did to take in this dog no matter what breed is great. |
