Just today a friend of mine told me about her full-coated ragdoll cat drowning in their pool. Please do not have a dog or cat or child left alone around a pool without a fence, drained, or covered and locked. Too easy for an accident to happen.

We never leave her alone out there. I just wanted precautions in place for that just in case.
The day before christmas we looked all over for my neighbors cat that had got out an another neighbor lost her cat too. While looking for Powder and inside cat who had never been out we came across my other neighbors cat out in the lake in our back yard. Apparently she needed a drink and fell in. There is a retaining wall all the way around the lake and she couldn't get back out and drown. We did find Powder and she was ok. We were thankful for that but it was hard news to deliver for my other neighbor.

Jackson LOVES the pool. He will only get in it if we're outside with him, but just in case we do have a camera inside where we watch the pool (not just for the dogs, but children too). I know all too well that dangers of pools, my 5 year old brother drowned in 2006 and it's obviously affected me terribly. But Jackson loves the water so much, I would never not allow him in it. I also bought him a lifejacket for safety measures although he can swim good without it. We taught him to swim to the stairs when he needs to get out!

Dogs usually naturally know how to swim once you put them in water, I don't think you'd have to really 'teach' them necessarily... just be there to supervise and guide them.

Love the video! We have the life jackets too but still are to big for Bailey. I like the camera Idea too. We have 3 glass sliding door so we can see our pool pretty well. I can't wait to play in the water with her! Your video Inspires me. So Hurry up spring!

OK.. so I read this thread and was going to comment and hesitated. I did not want to stir the pot. Then I went to another forum and the first post I read was about someone I know who has only had her beiwer a few weeks. Yesterday he fell in their pool and drowned. PLEASE.. either FENCE your pool or do NOT allow your yorkie NEAR it unless they are 100% supervised. It only takes a second for them to fall in. and even if you are right there, it is easy to not notice them. I KNOW! I have a poodel mix who fell in our inground spa before we fenced the pool area. We were 20 feet away and did not notice until one of the other dogs alerted us and it could have been disasterous. She could not get out and she is much bigger than our yorkies. It is CUTER than *ell to see them swimming, but believe me.. when it is cold and they fall in, they cannot swim for long before drowning. and they ALL cannot swim naturally. One of my six cannot and will not swim. she has a life vest and even with it on, she will not move her legs to swim. she will just sit in the water until she literally tips over sideways and still does not attempt to right herself. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!

I also know a man whose family lost their fifteen-year-old yorkie in the pool. This dog had never shown any interest in the pool, the family was careful not to let her out there by herself, and then one day, they accidentally left the gate open when they went on an errand....

Yorkies know how to swim, but they can get tired and drown after just a few minutes.

I would be REALLY paranoid if I had a pool. I would treat it as if I had a human baby in the house who never grows up. Definitely ramps are in order, and I would even consider an alarm.

Even if your dog doesn't seem interested in the pool, assume that sometime in the next fifteen years, he may get curious once or twice. Maybe a rat drowns in the pool, and he wants to catch it. Maybe he tries to drink out of it, and slips. Do everything you can to keep your pup safe.

It sounds like this really worries you, and I totally understand. We have a pool in my backyard, but it has a loop-lock cover on it. We haven't opened it since there are leaks that we can't seem to find and it is a huge pain at this point, but when it was open, it was always a concern. There were also three fishponds on our property when we moved in, but they made me too nervous. The small ones weren't a big deal to rip out but there was one that was made of gunite that was six foot deep and just huge. We felt badly destroying something that was very beautiful, but there was no way any dog could have gotten out if they fell in. In fact, the previous owner lost one of their dogs that way. If there is any water that they can get to, there needs to be and they need to know how to get out. My three girls loved the pool, and my husband and I always said that if our little one were alive, we would have had to find a way to keep the pool open for her. Whenever Gracie would get hot or very excited after playing hard, she would run to the back door and scratch at it. I'd open the door and she would run to the pool and hop in on one of the steps. Once she was cooled off, she'd "fly" so fast until she could run back and be inside. This happened several times a day. My girls were fascinated with the pool, so I worked with them a great deal on swimming. Each time I put them in the pool, I would place them in at a different spot of the pool. Some of the times I had their face oriented away from the steps. They had to orient themselves each time so that they could figure out themselves where the stairs were. Of course, I was right there if they were in any sort of trouble, but they never needed me. The most difficult thing for me was that they loved walking along the edge, and they sometimes would push each other in. Their breeder was there when it happened and my little Gracie fell in and really went under water. It took great restraint and strong urges from their breeder to let Gracie come up on her own to see that she could get up and out on her own. We were both there ready to jump in if she were in trouble. It literally broke my heart those few seconds not rescuing her, but Gracie was able to do it, and she remained confident in the water. I never left a raft in the pool when it was unattended, and I never really let my girls in the back alone even with the pool closed, but there always was the worry if they got out somehow on their own. When we were there, if a raft was in the water, they often would hop on. When they were bored, they hopped off and swam to the steps and got out. As they grew older, they started to develop more fears toward the water. My Kiwi was just obsessed in general with water, and she each day had to chase the shower water. Right after she went out in the morning, she'd race upstairs to the shower. She knew that was going to be my next stop, and chasing that water made her so happy. It became a balance trying to keep her dry as much as possible and allow her to do something I know was an obsession and joy for her. If you are extra vigilant and your baby becomes more comfortable with swimming and has a way out of the pool if she falls in, she should be fine. Bailey is beautiful and I can tell how much you love her. Enjoy every minute with her. May you have much happiness and many years of health, love, and laughter with her.

We have a pool in our cape coral house..unfortunately i'm not there right now

Anyways, one time we had our solar cover on and Pasquale went right across the pool so fast he didnt even sink...it was like he was walking on water!

Squale is pretty good when the cover is off...he rarely goes near the pool. Probably cause he's a little obsessed with the boxer dogs behind us. But at one point i was looking into safety devices for him and found this TURTLE wristband pool alarms, Safety Turtle pool safety alarms and gate alarms

Maybe you could put a harness on your little one and attach the bracelet to the harness...that way if she goes in the pool..the main alarm base will sound.

Just a thought.

Hopefully hubby and i will be down there in Jan/feb sometime...the weather up here is unbearable!

We are not far from you. We are in Town and River just over the bridge on Mc Greggor. Seems everyone in our neighborhood has a pool. The weather has been cold here but it will be about 80 this weekend. Bailey is not a big fan of the cold. lol I was wondering if they made a harness with a water safey alarm that would be nice.

The weather is getting nice, but not nice enough for the pool. For those that worry about my babies and the pool, I never leave them alone outside. I am always there. Ally has a problem with falling in and she doesn't weigh enough for a pool alarm. Although dogs do know how to swim, I purchased her a lifejacket to teach her which way to get out. She does not swim very well, but she needs to know which way the steps are so she doesn't go around in a circle and tire herself. We work on this during the summer months; it's too cold right now...although we could have worn shorts and a t-shirt today... Ally and Tia are my babies and I would never do anything to harm them. I am aware of the hazards of a pool and all the wildlife in my yard, that is why they are NEVER out of my sight.
