| How do i get my puppy registered? I know this maybe a stupid question, but i am a new dog owner and have no idea how all of this work.... i got my puppy from a friend, she is not a breeder and wasnt planning on the puppies... they just happened... my baby is a pure breed Yorkie... she is now 8 weeks old... I keep reading about puppies being AKC registered, how does that work? how can i get my baby registered? do i have to register her even if i am not planning to breed her? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Your friend would have had to register the litter with the AKC in order to get your pup registered.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | If both of her dogs were AKC registered (and not with limited registrations) then she should have been able to do it. What was her reasoning for not doing it? Here is a link to the AKC site: http://www.akc.org/reg/registeradog.cfm

| she didnt give me a reasoning... basically she didnt have the funds to do it.... i havent talk to her since last week, but i guess i'll ask her more directly to see what she says... i just didnt want to bother... and would rather do it myself since she was never ever to provide an answer for me when i asked about the babies registration...

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | She has 6 months to register the litter, if she chooses to do so. The cost is $25 plus $2/puppy. After 6 months, she can still do it, but an additional fee applies. But without her registering the litter, there is no way for you to get your AKC.

| Unless you plan on breeding your puppy, there really isn't a reason to register her. It's just paper.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | My guess is that she did not have breeding rights and therefore isn't allowed to register. Many breeders will tell pet buyers that the cost is so high, but the truth is the cost is just administrative fees for registration, and as Rhetts_mama mentioned only $25.00 a litter, and $2.00 a puppy. She is then issued a number, and you would pay an additional $20.00 to register the puppy in your name. However, if she had no breeding rights, no amount of money will help register the dogs with the AKC. Other registries will take her money, but that's why other registries are worthless. AKC papers tell pet owners that their breeders did not steal breeding rights from someone.

| Are the parents registered with the AKC? If not, your puppy can't be registered with the AKC. There are other alternative registries who will happily take your money to give you "papers", but they aren't worth the ink printed on them. Don't waste your money. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The AKC does a lot of great things including inspections of commercial breeders, and if you can afford it, I always recommend someone supporting the AKC. I hope in the future pet owners are as involved in the AKC as dog breeders are. Registration helps keep breeders honest, it does not make your dog a better dog.
