| New Yorkie owner, he came from a bad home, advice needed please. Hi everyone! I just received an adult Yorkie(about 3-4 years old). He came from a broken home with an owner who was a drug addict(female) and also had a mental disorder. I took him in just a few days ago, not knowing any of his history. I'm actually not sure if he is a full breed Yorkshire-but the vet and many others seem to clasify him as one. He seems a bit tall compared to the Yorkies I have seen. I will post a picture of him when I first received him. http://i54.tinypic.com/2yxkv1s.jpg He is so sweet, very hyper/jumpy/jittery. He seems to bark at all men, he is not neutered, and he had fleas which we are currently treating. I had to have his hair cut very short due to the matted hair and fleas. I am feeding him Eukanuba(which is what I was recommended but have read is not a good choice) I want the best for him. Do you have any tips for a new dog owner? Does he look like a yorkie? What are some good brands of food for him? Also, do I need yorkie specific food, or just small breed? What shampoo/conditioner do you use for your dog? Is he at an ok age for behavior classes? Thank you! |

| I'm so glad you took this yorkie in and are giving him a good home.. Maybe your vet could advise you about dog food and recommend a shampoo and conditioner. Enjoy your yorkie. He looks very sweet. |

| Thank you for taking him in! He's a sweetie. Looks all yorkie to me too. Just remember that they come in all sizes, not just teeny. Browse the site and you'll find a lot of information. Anything specific you need help in, please ask. Welcome to YT! Forgot to add, please get a harness ASAP! You can hurt your little one's neck by walking him by the collar.

| Thank you. I would like to know about food. I was giving him Eukanuba and the vet said that was fine. But after browsing through the forum I have read that that is not ideal for any dog. Is canidae all stages ok? |

| What a cutie! Thank you for giving him a good home. What is his name? He looks like a full Yorkie to me. My boys are long legged, tall. We even have a club here on YT for "Long Legged Supermodel" Yorkies. As DvlshAngel wrote, buy a harness ASAP. Yorkies have delicate tracheas and should not have leashes attached to collars. You are wonderful for thinking about behavior classes. Obedience and trick training using positive reinforcement are great ways to bond with your little guy. If you haven't already, establish a schedule for meals, potty breaks, playtime, etc. Having a routine is comforting and will encourage good behavior. My favorite hair products are Biogroom and Coat Handler, both of which I order online. Visit the grooming section for more suggestions. Just be sure to use a good tear free shampoo on his head. There are many good food choices: Wellness, Merrick Before Grain, Orijen, Acana, Fromm, Taste of the Wild, Castor and Pollux to name a few. Everyone has their favorites. Congrats on the new addition to your family! |

| Some people have great success with Canidae, but I will say that a number of dog food specialty stores dropped the brand because of ingredients/processing. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Congrats on your little sweet heart As for food goes.. Canidae is way better the what he was on.. My favorite for Izzy is Orijen but I also like natrural Balance, Natures Varitiy, Wellness and I have heard good things about Fromm.

| Congratulations on your new pup! He is adorable! I think he looks all Yorkie. Thank you for taking him in! I feed Orijen Adult kibble to my three-year-old and he does very well on it. It is neither Yorkie-specific or even small breed-specific, but I love the parent company (Champion Pet Foods) and their philosophy on a dog's ideal diet. I will occasionally add about a tablespoon of wet food (I use Wellness Core) if he is acting picky about eating kibble. As far as Canidae, I have never personally used it, but it is MUCH better than Eukanuba. Levi gets a bath about once a week (more often if he rolls in something stinky outside) and I usually use Nootie shampoo and detangling spray. It smells awesome! He gets professionally groomed every couple of months, and I trim up any stray hairs between grooms. I am trying so hard to let his hair grow a little longer!

| hm..I just bought canidae today.. I really want to give him the best food I can..I read all the bad things about canidae after I bought it =( I'd hate to switch his food so much so early into his new home. Should I switch now? I love this little guy already. He is so attached to me and very protective. I want to take good care of him. |

| Has he started eating it yet? You might be able to switch still. Where I use to get Kaji's food, they would let me bring back an open bag, even if it was almost full, as long as I had the receipt.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I can help you with a few advice, if I may. He does look like a Yorkie, may be on the taller side. You can feed him Yorkshire 28, a food for adult Yorkies by Rotyal Canin. It is full of good neutrients. Also if you have him neutered, it will help calm him down. It is also best to take him for behaviour training and maybe take him with you to various places to socialized. If he came from a broken home, chnaces are that he may not have had enough interaction with the outside world. I use Crown Royal Shampoo and Conditioner. You need to dilute it with 1 oz shampoo/conditioner to 16 oz water. You can get it from most show groom websites. If you need any more information, please feel free to contact me. Good luck! | |

| If you have decided to change his food, please make sure you do it gradually, as to not upset his fragile digestive system. Maybe 1/4 of the new food with 3/4 of the old food, for a few days, then go 1/2 and 1/2 for another few days, next do 3/4 new food and 1/4 old food and gradually ease into the new food. |

| As far as food goes, I feed my yorkie Wellness Small Breed. It's an excellent food and he should like it, as it'll be much more nutrient-rich than the Eukanuba. It's still early on, so I would go ahead and switch him. And Canidae isn't a bad food, neccessarily. I think that each brand can benefit certain types of dogs. I would go with the Wellness or Blue Buffalo small breed adult. And a couple notes for a new yorkie owner: ~Be patient. He will learn his routine and new life in time and he will definitely show his love for you for it. ~Training classes are an excellent idea. Not only does this curb potential bad behaviors, but it'll act as a bonding activity for you all. Petsmart offers training classes that I've taken and love, and they'll also enroll you in another class if you aren't satisfied with yours. ~Get a harness for him. Yorkies are very delicate in the throat area and a harness would be better to walk him on. ~Try to get him into a routine. Waking up around the same time, potty breaks around the same time, etc. This will help him feel more comfortable. ~Try to socialize him around other dogs and other people. Get him used to others so that he can really flourish and have a good time and not be afraid of others.

1. patience 2. walks, exercise and also TRICKS! Tricks are not only fun because you can show off what your dog can do but Yorkies (most terriers) are super smart and eager to please, they need mental stimulation tricks are like games and exercise for them at the same time. I feel tricks also build their confidence. 3.Also try stimulating toys a dog that has been abused often wants to be alone at first and giving them a toy that stimulates their mind keeps it busy while they get used to you-well it distracts them and they think more about it that you and you can get them more comfortable without thinking about it. Especially give the toy when men come over so the focus in the toy and not the man he's there its okay slowly but surely push it but slowly remember #1 Safe toys Yorkie sized! No rawhide! Harness and appropriate height raised feeder. 4. Get him fixed right away, he can rest while he gets used to the transition-with a male make sure you get the cone thingy for his neck I didn't get one and realized how much easier it would have been instead of watching him constantly. 5. Dawn dish soap kills fleas ( I just learned that on here!) and will give him a deep good cleaning-aids in getting the ratty mat stuff out and removes all oils I use it with nexxus, biosilk, biolage (mostly matrix products here)-well I use my shampoos & conditioners on them so ye but I hear main and tail is awesome for dogs and much cheaper its just easier to use my stuff its already in the shower and it makes them look great too. Just a personal note-even water bath afraid dogs (well mine) love the removable shower head it makes it so easy to "bath them" 6. Innova personally here the one with the Yorkie on the bag its small bites-in kibble not wet food. Zukes mini naturals are a safe Yorkie treat, small greenies broken in half anyways for teeth we love dogswell breathies and mellow mut (for the vets) and also stella and chewy's duck duck dinner patties 7. A dog is never to old for behavior classes-best let him have a few to get healthy, fixed, and used to you before jumping into training and behavior-my Scoobers was a fly on the wall and a blur racing from behind the couch to under the table for 8 days before he came out and we went for an unforced walk and he went to his dog bed and laid down for the first time instead of running to hide as soon as we got back in and I removed his leash-it takes time but yours sounds not as extremely-well Scoobers was scared of grass so ye it was extreme with him...best of luck and congratulation! There are so many helpful people on here! Research everything and enjoy the heck out of your new Yorkie (mix-silky-looks pretty Yorkie in your pic)) post pics and keep us updated!
