They should wear them, but mine doesn't. I'm really bad about that kind of thing. Actually, don't even know where they are right now... It really is in Ellie's best interest to not wear a collar or harness unsupervised. I don't like them really tight, and when they are at all lose, she gets her nails and jaw stuck. Being in a collar 24/7 seems really uncomfortable. And come to think about it, I wouldn't sleep with something around my neck, so it wouldn't make sense for me to have my dog do that. Used to, but stopped.

All of ours wear the breakaway collars. They have their rabies, ID, and microchip info on them.

Okay now I feel better about having mine attached tot heir harnesses and after seeing so many choking dog stories I'm not changing my mind about collars-many people have noted break away collars-well if your dog gets out anyways and they say squeeze through your fence-wouldn't the break away come off and they'd be collar-less? I'm sticking to my harnesses they seem safer and more comfortable plus as I said my harnesses are bright orange and reflective in case my dogs get away on a walk they are more likely to be seen wearing these and not God forbid ran over or hidden etc.

Roxie has her ID tag and her rabies tag on her collar all the time. The only time I take it off is when she is getting a bath, and she actually gets upset when I take her collar off. She'll follow me around until I put it back on her. Her ID tag has my phone number and her microchip number on it just in case she ever gets lost or stolen. I just feel better knowing she has it on.

I think the idea of having a tag is so that if anyone finds your dog they can see a number and call, you'd be surprised how many people find a dog adn don't call a pound to have the dog scanned for a microchip or to turn in the dog- I think people think they are saving a found dog from being taken to the pound.
**So even though my dogs are chipped they have tags with their named the word MICROCHIPPED (I heard this prevents theft of pets too) and my name and phone number so anyone can see it and call immediately.
** My Princess would try and eat the tags off the other dog's harnesses it took training to get them to leave them alone-it was a battle but seemed well worth the effort for me.
** As I said I'm breaking the law (I'm a very naughty girl for this I actually feel bad now) because despite having my dogs all current on all their vaccinations I don't have them licenses in my current city. I inquired and was sent the paperwork and just never followed through-if something should happen before I get them licensed or if I do and they are not wearing the extra tag (who put more than one tag on their dog that's rude) I'll be fined-maybe I can have another set of custom made tag made that include all information so they are wearing only one tag...

Zoe and Zach's tags are on their harness. They wear it when they go out but I don't keep it on them when indoors.

Darwin and Mabel have their rabies, microchip and personal id tags on them all of the time except for bath. IMO all of these tags will help bring my pups home quicker. I don't worry so much about them getting caught on fences as they are always supervised and the collars are properly sized to their necks. Each to their own, but I think ID tags are great - Mabel is also tattooed just to help a bit more!

I've heard about this, but what if your phone number changes and I've wondered the morality issue with it...what does your Mabel's tatoo say...did you have it done?

The tattoo says "please contact 555-3543, if we are not home, please contact 555-2326, in case we move please contact this number 555-3674. It also has her address and her favourite colour. It also says "I LOVE MOM!"

Just kidding, not sure what you mean by the morality issue is, please fill me in. The number is a registry number, similar to microchipping. It is written close to her belly, just up from her left leg and is about 7 numbers long. I had her tattooed the same time she was spayed and microchipped.

Very true. But, what if they are just wandering the street and don't get very far. A neighbor can easily read the number and call to let us know they have our baby. Megansmomma had a similar experience. All her babies had just simply walked out the door when it was accidentally left open, and a good Samaritan called the number on the tag without the hassle of taking them to the vet to get scanned.

We can play the what if game all day! It really comes down to what you're comfortable with. Kaji is typically my little shadow, but he did go "walk himself" once when an old roomie left the door wide open. He knew the way and was able to come back within the time that we usually would take on a walk. I'm comfortable with the collar, even the breakaway kind. It's an extra safety net for me. I sleep in my necklaces often, so to me it's no big deal if he sleeps in his. Actually, when he has his collar and bells on, I can hear him if he's trying to sneak into the kitchen when I'm sleeping. Little brat!

I have all the girls tags: rabbies, identification, microchip tag on their harnesses. We only wear the harness when going in the car.

I was so glad to see this thread as I am having an issue with Sadie and Scooter. They both have ID tags and rabies tags and they both chew on them, Sadie is the worst so I take her collar off unless we leave the house. I thought about maybe putting the tags on their harnesses but they do not wear them all the time, only when we go on on walks. I was wondering if there was some way to get them to stop chewing on their tags.

There is a company that makes tags that slide on the collar and lay flat against it instead of hang. You don't necessarily need the rabies tag if you have the ID tag. They can always call you and verify the rabies information, so just the one tag slid on would do. Just google slide on dog tags or someone will post the link.

Mine wears an ID tag and rabies tag on her harness when we go out of the house. Inside of the house, I don't like putting her in her harness -- we rarely leave the door open for her to run out and she never goes outside unsupervised.
