| Tattoo??? Hi - Mabel will be going in to get spayed on Monday. I will be getting her micro chipped but am also thinking about getting her tattooed. What is the usual identifying tattoo put on a dog - just something I never really put much thought into. Thanks! |

| I looked into google a bit and it sounds like it has a registry for tattoos similar to microchipping - and of course I'm thinking of it being done when she is put under for her spaying - I would imagine it wouldn't be something done when a dog was awake |

| Before microchips were common some people did tattoo their dogs but there really isn't any reason to put your pet through that discomfort now. Microchips are great, all vets and animal shelters are required to have scanners and they know to scan for the microchip if a stray animal is brought in. They also know where to call to check for the registered owners of these microchipped dogs. If you tattoo your dog a vet and/or animal shelter may only scan for a microchip they may not look for a tattoo since it isn't commonly done anymore. If you could find somone to tattoo your dog (does your vet do it?) you would have to tattoo inside an ear, put it on the tummy, or the inside of the hind leg (ouch) and hope that it was still able to be read years later, that they thought to turn the dog over to look for the tattoo, and that the hair didn't hide the tattoo. I would recommend you just microchip your dog, they are very safe and very common. Teresa |

| Tattooing was the old school method prior to microchipping and it was breeder specific. The breeder would do this before giving you the dog, so I don't know why you'd feel you had to tattoo him too. My last dog had tattoos on the inside of the ears. Do the micro chipping get a licence and that should be enough. |

| My greyhound, a retired racer, had a tattoo in each ear. One ear was the breeder's ID, the other was his specific ID number registered with the National Greyhound Association. The number was the month and year of his whelping, what order he was in the litter and another number or two for his own ID. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i've seen a lot of dogs with tattoo's lately. They've most likely come from shelters. The tattoo is just a straight line along side where the surgery incision was to mark that the dog was spayed/neutered. I think that's a great idea for shelters to do that. As far as tattooing my own pet, if the vet offered such services and did it clearly so that it could be read years later i think i might do it on the belly area next to the spay incision.

| My two youngest dogs, Lizzy my yorkie, who is three, and my IG puppy, one this month, both have a small greenish tatoo on their tummy from when they were spayed. Neither came from a shelter or were ever in a shelter. My vet doesn't do it, but some vets in the Atlanta area must do it routinely. Attached is a picture of Lizzy's tat.

| The tattoo was a suggestion from my vet - he said that in his long career where we live (fairly rural) he has only had one dog returned to their owners because of the microchip but he has had many returned because of the rabies tag. He suggested tattoo in case a collar falls off. Thanks for the advice. |

| My girls were given a tatoo to show they had been spayed. My vet does this for all animals that are spayed/neuterd in his office. "Should" the animal ever end up in a shelter or in someone else's care, this would prevent them from being unnecessarily put under anesthesia. It was done while they were under and although it *freaked* me out first, lol, I quickly became okay with it. |
