Hello, I'm new to the forum :D Also A New Yorkie (Mix) Owner few questions. Hello, I'm new to the forum as well as a first time yorkie owner. Louie is a mix he's a "hybid" or "mutt" called a Shorkie = Shi Tzu x Yorkie. I have a few questions : (1) I'm having a hard time housebreaking him, he prefers coming inside to pee on the wood floors I have to chase him down when I want to take him out and wait for him to decide to potty and most the time he wont he just waits for me to give up and bring him inside were he pees on the floor. I'm assuming its harder because he was older when I bought him 4 months. Any advice recommendations will be VERY appreciated ! (2) He HATES the kennel he makes the most horrible noises when you put him in there ! It sounds like someones strangling him to death. What should I do ? Let him roam the house ? Let him cry ? (3) Will his hair grow out ? Its really greasy looking and not to long about medium length does it get longer as he grows ? Also will he change color ? He's black and tan more black then tan but I've noticed yorkies change as they mature being a mix I would assume I'm just going to have to wait and see. (4) I've heard putting yorkies under anistesa is dangerous true ? I want to have him neutered but have heard its dangerous and he could die while under. (5) He's 18 weeks old and 4lbs how much longer will he grow ? What age will he be full grown ? Any answers advice etc will be very much appreciated ! Thank you

| Congrats on your new baby!!! 4 months is not old at all. It is actually the recommended age for yorkie babies to go to their forever homes. As far as house training goes, just be patient. Set a schedule, and stick to it! Since he is so young, take him out often and stay out for a good 15 or 20 mins. if he doesn't go, immediately put him back in the crate for 10 mins and then try again. If the crate is bothering you, you can try the ex-pen with a piddle pad inside. When he's older and able to hold it longer, you can retry outside. My vet said that our pups stop growing at 18 months. You can guess but really it isn't for certain. I think it's double their weight at 12 weeks. As long as you have a full blood panel done to check their liver function, neutering will not be a problem. Discuss it with your vet, and wait until his growth plates close (your vet will tell you). While he's under, you can also have him microchipped and have any retained baby teeth pulled. No need to put him under again for either procedure. Welcome to YT and if you ever need advice or answers feel free to ask!

Welcome to YorkieTalk and Congratulations on your little cutie! 1. Housebreaking does take time. The key is consistancy. Take him out right after he plays, eats, naps...any activity that changes his focus. The pee pads work, but to save money (and landfill waste) I use a stash of old towels. I leave them on the tile floor by the back door (where we let the dogs out). They get the hang of things pretty quickly, plus the towels are easy to toss in the washer. 2. Oh boy...I know what you mean...but they eventually do give up on the yowling and crying. If you can stand it, crating is convenient for certain times. If you prefer not to crate and still want to contain him during the day with a bit more roaming room...try an ex-pen. 3. The hair? Well, both breeds have a bunch of it...it should grow some more. For the greasiness, I'd use an oatmeal based dog shampoo. It helped my dogs coats without stripping and drying. 4. I'd speak to your vet about this. Ask about his or her familiarity with anesthetizing toy breeds. 5. Genetics can play a role with this, since there are larger and smaller sizes within the individual breeds. Growth spurts can still happen. I have a larger female that was bred to our very small male. They produced a litter of pups with similar birth weights. Now at 10 weeks of age, three stayed fairly small and two will be at the larger end of the scale. Interesting to see how they mature. Hey, I'm in Ohio too!

I have a shorkie also and she was hard to housebreak also. We tried everything. One day she went out in the backyard with my two basset hounds did her business outside and from that day forward she's been housebroken. It took about 7 months. As for the color. Zoe was almost all black when we got her at 4 months old. She is now mostly black with some white underneath. She's 11 months old and weighs about 12 lbs I don't really see too much yorkie in her except for the color. She looks more like a shi tzu. I think they stop growing at about a year maybe less Zoe is fully grown I think. She doesn't seem to be growing anymore. You're the first person I've ever spoken to on the forum that has a shorkie. My friend and I plan to get another shorkie in the future because outside of housebreaking they are really smart and funny. Last edited by lexi43; 10-26-2010 at 06:24 AM.

Learning to Live with your Yorkie or Shorkie Welcome to the forum. I am also a new joiner. Patience and more patience are necessary to this type of ownership! I was ready to give up on mine and now you would have never guessed there was a potty problem. I never totally trust my yorkie because this only allows a freedom that should not be given. I have read so many good replies to you on your questions. Consistence is the key to the housebreaking. We are currently using an oven timer to go off every 2 hours as a reminder to US that our dog may need to go out. She only barks in the morning and not during the day to go out. Otherwise the dog expects us to read her mind. Be very observant. I have noticed that if I ask Mitsy if she needs to poop, she will literally sniff her behind and make a circle with a little tap dance which means YES!!!! But again, try to put your dog out on a schedule. The crate: Yes, put them in the crate if you are unable to watch them. They will learn to make this their home. Just like children, they may fuss at first, but you must be strong. Mitsy now will lounge in hers on her own when I have her loose. I tell her: "Good Dog" when she voluntarily visits her crate. Yes, when you take the dog to be neutered, have them do all the tests as another forum member has mentioned. It is a safety factor for your dog's health. I hope this gives you some comfort. My dog just has to look at me with those eyes of love and that is why I stand strong with the rules of Yorkie Love and Companionship; because it is worth it!

Thank you Thank you for all the helpful information. We are starting to implement his crate as a house training aid while he sleeps with me at night I sleep lightly so when he wakes up I just get up and take him out But during the day I plan on using his crate during the day if he refuses to potty outside try putting him in there for 10 mins then try again as suggested. I hope he gets the longer coat I love putting his hair in little pony tails and grooming him bath blow dry etc His brother had hair like a cairn terrier and looked as if his coat would be short/medium length. ( I found him on hoobly.com ) Agian thank you for the advice
