I know -- just can't help! I love reading something like this that I have seen with my own. I learned to let them be and they will know when it is all perfect for them to lay down.

I guess it is more of an instinct than truly moving anything. Now my Jack Russell actually moves her blanket around. She prefers to have a baby blanket in her bed so she can sort of make a nest. Probably all comes from when in the wild, they had to beat down the greenery and make a place safe and comfortable before laying down.

Rhia LOVES to do this! On the couch with her blanket, on the bed, on the chair behind my computer chair, etc. She usually will bring in her favorite teddy bear toy or monkey toy and curl up with them once she figures out if it is comfortable enough.

Belle has done this since we got her at 2 pounds. She does it on the couch, in her crate, on her blankets and especially in our bed. Sometimes she will dig to "bury" a toy or biscuit. She gets it just right then uses her nose to pack in down. When she's done she looks at me and once in awhile just to be a pain, I'll say, "I can see it!", then she has to start all over again. Fun to watch

Im so glad I found this thread.... you are so right about helping them but Charlie actually moves the blankets and makes a cubby hole to rest in, and if I try to help him out its like you said he starts alll over

Both Zach my yorkie and Zoe my shorkie do this every night and you're right, if you try to help them they give you a dirty look and start all over.

Marley does this. She sleeps in the bed with me and every night she digs at the mattress before she lays down! Lol

Had to laugh at this one - for sure never "help" them or they will start all over again! Mine also get so intense - they pull up the blanket with their teeth, dig and claw at it, head butt it and pack it down, then dig and repeat.
Isn't this something from the wild...think I read that - where wild animals turn around three times to help pack down the brush for a bed.

Wolves do it too..both in the wild and domestic situations.

I am just seeing this thread and I agree, I think it's an instinct that they have. Toto seldom does this but she does check to make sure all her "things" are in place. She sits next to me and when I raise my head to see what she wants, she reaches up and gives me 2-3 sweet little kisses smack on my mouth and I tell her "nite-nite". She immediately curls up next to me, I cover her with one of her little blankies and in moments she is snoring. It is a precious little routine!

Ditto here as well. We got Buddy a new pillow and he loves to "dig" it for a while and then it's off to sleep!
