| another dog tried to attack Freddy Just wanted to share this with you...and maybe get your opinions I just walked Freddy around the neighborhood and there was a boy taking a dog out. Freddy is crazy about other dogs and of course as soon as he seen him he pulled in that direction. I seen the the boys parents were standing at the door and also that they had a very small dog. (not sure about the breed) so i decided to say hi...Well when we got there.. freddy started jumping around the dog...the other dog just stood there so i though that he was fine with freddy being so jumpy..(since not all dogs like it and i have to pull freddy away sometimes) All of a sudden the other dog attacked Freddy i pulled on him and got him away just in time to not get bitten...when i looked at Freddy his face was all wet...like the other dog spit on him or something...the boys parents told him to pull the dog away and asked me if Freddy was ok...but still..i was shocked! Now i am kind of worried...freddy is fine...he was just surprised and looked at me like: why doesn't he like me?? Did something like that happen to anybody before? |

| Freddy was on the other dog's territory, lucky he did not get seriously injured. Even little dogs, like ours, can cause injury. Next time you might want to pick Freddy up and then approach and ask if the other person's dog is the type that enjoys meeting new dogs and if it's overly territorial.

| Ahhh, welcome grasshopper!!! Everyone has a starting point somewhere... great for you getting a really friendly, happy dog. Even people that have had many dogs and/or multiple dogs mess up. As in the couple that waved you to come on up, they did not take into consideration how their own dog would react to a new dog coming onto its territory. They should have handled the situation from their side a bit better, as well. You'll learn alot about dog behavior in this forum, familiar and unfamiliar, just search for topics and read read read.....

| To me, it doesn't sound like the other dog tried to 'attack' Freddy but more "put him in his place." If dogs are being obnoxiously friendly, often times an older more 'mature' dog will say 'that's enough!' by giving them a growl, nip, etc. And since there was no blood or damage done (which a big dog could EASILY kill or badly injure a little dog), his intent was not to kill, but just teach a lesson. I am glad Freddy is okay and everyone learned from this experience! It's super important to read dogs body language, because I am also one of those people that lets Jackson go up to other dogs so long as the owner says it's okay. Jackson also LOVES all other dogs, and I love for him to be socialized, and sometimes I catch myself just allowing it to happen and maybe putting *too* much trust in other peoples dogs.

| Be careful which dogs you allow your little one to approach. I made the mistake with Ringo (when he was a pup) of allowing him to go up to every strange dog we came upon in a walk. OR allowing strange dogs to walk up to us. Ringo got snapped at a few times and then he was no longer so friendly to other dogs. Had I been more judicious about which dogs I allowed him to interact with . . perhaps he would still be friendly to other dogs. Now, his plan seems to be the that the best defense is a good offense. What I didn't realize at the time - was that Ringo did NOT need to meet every strange dog we approached; and that I should have made sure they were friendly before allowing that to happen. It is rare, now, that I will let Lucy or Ringo get close to a strange dog while on a walk. If I see a little one playing at the park and they seem friendly - I will let Lucy play for a bit; but I am very very cautious about it now.

YT 1000 Club Member | I have to be careful with Natalie too. She is a bully over Charlie (who is twice her size). She thinks she can be a bully over other dogs too. I pick her up when we approach another dog, maybe I'm being too cautious but she's my baby...Charlie is so laid back, he just looks at the other dog until they approach and then the sniffing begins. |

| I'm glad that Freddy is OK. Does anyone carry pepper spray or anything to deter a dog attack? This morning I was walking Cody and a lady with a shephard was extremely aggressive, barking, growling, etc and the lady could barely control him. Cody never attempted to get near the dog. The lady fell to the ground but thankfully she wasn't hurt and the dog didn't get away. It was scary so I was wondering whether anyone carries something to deter an attack? |
