| DISGUSTING TOPIC WARNING... need to know if this remedy is toxic or safe Hello All, I'm sure some of you recall my earlier posts asking for help for bugs in my freaking apartment. If you're squeamish stop reading now... Well it's official the little buggers are indeed cockroaches, and I've not been able to keep Harley out long enough to have this place exterminated. So I have less than 10 days left in this place and I want to run a few natural remedies by ya'll... By the way I'm not the source, my apartment is fairly clean for a university student I've been cleaning like crazy since this happened, stupid neighbors, stupid building managers who don't care. So the first thing is, I've decided absolutely nothing will be packed in anything other than a sealed rubbermaid. I'm not bringing the buggers with me... any tips to assure they don't come with is greatly appreciated. Once I seal the rubbermaid they can't get in right? Where do these buggers like to lay eggs, I'm going to wash most of my stuff, but I haven't seen any in our two clothing closets, am I safe to pack that stuff, or should that be all washed too. Ok remedies: I've heard that fresh bay leaves deter the buggers, seeing my place clearly isn't the source I'm thinking this may keep them out of my kitchen long enough to move. I've heard people online have had success with making bay leave tea and spraying it along walls and stuff too. I'm also thinking of making mesh bay leave baggies to put in each box... Will bay leaves hurt Harley if ingested. I've also heard that pepper is a deterrent, and dish soap will kill them. making a mixture of these things apparently works. Neither of those will hurt Harley right? of course I'm not going to let him drink the dish soap or anything. Garlic, cyanpepper, and onion was also suggested, and boric acid but that sounds like it might hurt Harley. I've heard that dryer sheets eliminate bugs, does this work for cockroaches? Also some of you mentioned putting things in the freezer to make sure eggs don't come with. I have some pasta boxes that weren't transferred into rubber containers, and a few bags of flour that were stored in a big rubbermaid container, and I'd like to just take the extra precaution. They wouldn't have been able to get in my flour if it was sealed would they... I'm trying to combat these buggers the best I can, with Harley present. I've also heard that bug bombing the moving truck is a good idea, however I'm only moving 2 blocks away so I don't think it'll be safe to enter the truck that soon if we bomb... Sorry for the disgusting topic, I'm just really in a panic about this and know no one else to ask... Needless to say I AM VERY EXCITED TO MOVE I hate my apartment building, they never clean the garbage chute, people are slobs, and I'm sick of it. Thank God they are not in Harley's room much any more... poor Harley.

| Discusting topic Warning Please do not put any onion out where Harley can get it because onion is very poisonious to Dogs even the smallest piece. I was at my vet a few months back and they brought a yorkie in that got a piece of onion and it was touch and go for a few days. so be careful with onion. Linda and Girls |

| I heard that orange oil is a good deterrent, but I've never tried it. Here is a formulation that is commercially available: Orange Guard Organic Insect Killer 64 oz But if you google "orange oil pesticide" I'm sure you can find plenty of recipes were you can make your own.

| You might put roach traps or gel in your new apartments kitchen and bath cabinets, where the little one can't get . But just in case some start hatching they will find the "food" and never get any farther...Sounds like your careful planning should take care of most! Good Luck! |

| Roaches like warm places . . .electrical appliances . . .especially under refrigerators . . .so microwaves, toasters, etc . . .roach haven . . .they can live in your furniture, clothing, bedding, etc . . . We lived in a condo when we were first married and had a roach infestation from neighboring units . . .needless to say, nothing came with us when we moved . . .

| The thing that surprised me on that list was raw eggs. I know that a lot of people feed raw eggs as a part of a raw food diet for their dogs.

| Cockroaches love moisture, so concentrate treatment in the kitchen and bathroom. Diatomaceous earth can be sprinkled around in cabinets. It is harmless to humans and pets. On roaches... it's like eating glass and destroys their exoskeletons. May take up to 2 weeks to work. Catnip is a natural repellant and can be brewed and used as a spray. The eggs are encased in an eggsack, about the size of a partially engorged tick. They can drop the sack anywhere. When packing, shake out any clothing if your apartment is heavily infested. You can sprinkle Diatomaceous earth in the bottoms of any boxes, and cache's of catnip in with anything. Glue traps Warning: I came home from work one day to hear a swoosh-swoosh sound coming from my apartment. I was afraid to enter. When I did, I found my Yorkie with one glue trap stuck on each front foot, and glue all over his mouth where he had tried to chew the traps off. I spend the next four hours trying to find something that would cut the adhesive. The last thing I tried was GoJo Orange hand cleaner (for mechanics) This cut the adhesive quite easily, and I followed that immediately with Dawn dishwashing liquid, to make sure all the hand cleaner was gone. | The bay leaves do work, either fresh ones in the produce section or the dried ones in the spice section at the grocery store. what's nice is that they're nice and flat so they can be slipped into little cracks and crannies that cockroaches like to hide in. And I would definitely slip the flour especially into the freezer. If you've noticed, whenever you open a bag of flour, there's flour outside the bag. the bags are made of layers of paper and ARE sealed, but it's not always an airtight seal so it is possible that the roaches could get into the bag or at least between one of the layers of the bag. |

| Thanks everyone for all of this... I thought onions were bad so I've stayed away from that mixture, the bay leaves have been hidden all over the place. Luckily I'm not the source of the roaches, I'd say I only see 1-3 a day after the one big incident, and usually if I see more than one they are a few "babies" so those get killed quickly. Some stupid slob near me must be fully infested. I've been thankful that there doesn't appear to be a nest or gathering place of them. Or if there is I haven't found it yet. I haven't found any (knocking hard on wood) in my bedroom, so I'm guessing they haven't gotten in the mattress. Other than that I have two chairs, and those are the only pieces of fabric related furniture that is coming, one is leather I don't see a place where anything can get it, and it's been two weeks since I've seen any in the livingroom, and there weren't many there when we found them. We used this as an excuse to sell our futon and buy a real coach. I'm slowly working my way through the kitchen, I'm washing everything in my dishwasher before packing, and packing with clean fresh out of the dryer dish clothes. So that should keep everything clean that goes into the new place. I'm a little scared to start cleaning the lower counters, but I'll be armed with my bay leaves and bay leave tea, to try and drive them out. Thank-you all for the help, no wonder I'm having anxiety attacks a lot lately, these little creepers are driving me nutts.
