| New to YT Have some Yorkie Questions Hello.I am new to yorkie talk.I have done some reading about yorkies at barns & noble.I have never owned a yorkie, but I find them one of the most beautiful breeds of dogs.I love there hair, and they all look like they smile. I have been a dachound owner for 10 years until she got sick and had a siezure that would not stop the vet could do nothing to stop them.It was sad and I miss her so much.I would get another doxie but there backs are so fragile it would bug me worring about it 24/7.No I am not trying to replace her. I work from home live in a house (not a apt) Take good care of my animals keep them on a leash, don't let them run the neighborhood,Have a big yard to play. I feel I would be a good owner to a yorkie.Although I have some concerns. The liver shunts I have asked some breeders about them and they act clueless. How do I find a good responsible breeder? What questions should I be asking them about yorkies in general? The yorkies colors.I have looked at a normal colored one and a Parti. The party had black hair around its eyes will that change and go lighter or red or stay the same? Prices is there a point when you are paying to much or to little for a Yorkie? One I looked at for a parti was 2000 and for the normal color was 700. After I buy one what test and other stuff do I have the vet do? Thank You.Thats all I can think of right now.: |

| Welcome to YT!! You are going to be such a good yorkie mom, and such a smart person for wanting to understand the breed before actually owning one. Ok, tip time. To find a good breeder, I recommend you check out the YTCA, the yorkie mother club. They have a breeder referral page, (breeder contact) where they have YTCA members that breed listed from all over the US. All good breeders will have answers to all your health questions. Also, really good reading material that all soon to be yorkie moms and dads really should read. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ease-read.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...uch-thing.html

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Welcome to YT so great you got here before buying a Yorkie. If you ask a Yorkie Breeder about Liver shunts and they act clueless run don't walk from that breeder. Which I suspect you already know, but just re-inforcing what you do know. Yorkies can be fragile just like Daschunds, but in their own way, perhaps different to Daschunds. they can be hard to housebreak, and can be yappy, but they also can be friendly, a cuddle bug, or an energetic companion for you. The links posted in an earlier message are really great. Read and absorb them. You sound like you'd be a wonderful Yorkie Mom.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Hi there and welcome to YT. I'm sorry about the loss of your dachsund. I have one, too. They are great dogs, but I understand your concerns about getting another one due to back issues. There are several parti breeders on this forum, so I'm sure they can answer your questions about the coloring. Until then, here is a link to more info: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...formation.html First and foremost on finding a good yorkie is you are buying the breeder first, and then the dog. You are going to want someone who will be there for you long after the sale is done. You'll preferably want someone close by, you'll want to meet them in person before you buy the dog and you'll want to see the conditions the dogs are being bred and raised in. Liver shunts: If the breeder is clueless about shunts, RUN! If you scroll to the bottom of this screen, you'll see a search bar. Type in liver shunt and toggle the search to yorkietalk and you should be able to pull up a lot of good information. One of the tests you will want to have done is a liver enzymes test at 6 months of age, even if your pup seems perfectly healthy. Price: It really varies by region and quality. In general, you will pay less over all for a "pet quality" animal- that means one who doesn't fit the AKC showing/breeding standard. The closer to the mythical "perfect dog", the higher the price. Yorkies with a good history of championed ancestors will run you more because they fit that image. Stay away from anyone who is charging more for a "teacup" or smaller than average yorkie- AKC doesn't recognize the teacup label. Smaller than average dogs are also more likely to have health issues over their life time. That being said, anyone selling yorkies for less than the going rate may be cutting corners in their breeding program somewhere. Health concerns: Yorkies (and all toy breeds, really) have a higher incidence of hypoglycemia, Legg Calve Perthes disease, subluxated patellas, atlantoaxial instability, gum disease, collapsed trachea and liver shunts. They will do best with a vet who is well versed in the health concerns of the toys, especially anesthesia protocols. Ideally, they shouldn't have multiple vaccines given in one visit, and the vaccine series shouldn't be started at 6 weeks. I'm sure I probably left something out, but someone else will come on and fill in the blanks. Good luck on your search. Doing your research first will help you immensely in the long run.

Remember that responsible breeders charge about the same price (or less sometimes) as a bad breeder, so get as much information as you can on the breeder. Google the breeder's name to see if there is anything written good or bad. As for the coloring, a Yorkie bred for Standard will normally change to a blue on the body and a tan or gold head. Good luck with your search! Sounds like you're on your way to becoming an informed new mommie! | |

| Thank You everyone for the wonderful info.I want to be sure the puppy I get was breed with care and compasion.I want the breeder to have a love in there heart for the breed.I dont want to deal with someone who knows less them me or just wants to make a quick dollar. What I find hard is I live in a small area,so its been hard finding people who actually breed them around here. The ones in my area I have called about have honestly acted clueless to my questions about liver shunts and other stuff. I would have a hard time buying one from the internet as I have looked at puppys online. There was a few ladies that were very helpful.I just think it would be weird to not see a dog in person pay for it and then get it and something be wrong.I don't think I could handle that.We get attached to our animals and fall in love.I want a healthy well cared for puppy. After my doxie and her cushing's problem and loving her so much and all the time I spent at the vet with her was just sad.I know animals get old but she was 10 and that still seems young.I got her when I was 18 and I did buy her from a petstore pet city.At the time I didn't know about puppy mills. It breaks my heart to say this but I bet thats where she came from as a puppy. She was a very odd looking doxie almost chiweenie looking but small she was like 6-7 lbs tiny little head.Oh how sweet she was. Thank you everyone for the wonderful links and advice you gave |
