Default Hi!-Looking to get a Yorkie soon!

So I'm not a cat person. And right now I'm living with my husband and two cats. (We got them after we moved in together.) And I just..I miss having a pet and I haven't really connected with them. (I grew up with dogs.) So we've decided when we're done with the house buying thing we're getting me a puppy. Based on the fact that we have two female cats and a host of other things we've decided that the Yorkshire Terrier is the best breed for us and that we need a male puppy. I don't want to support an unethical breeder so I've been looking at rescues but...I dunno. I just don't know if we're going to be able to find THE ONE.

I'm discouraged. Help?

You will find great info on here. Often you'll hear of babies needing new homes. Also, the breeders on here have wonderful advice. Be patient and wait for the right one. Check specific forums...such as rescues... or homes needed...

I flipped through there and I feel a little better.

I just...I see the cats cuddling up with my husband and I miss that. (I had family dogs as a child.) I want that back and I just miss having a furry friend to greet me and to love on. (I'm just...SO not a cat person.)

One thing that knocks us out with some rescues is that our cats aren't fixed. I would fix any puppy that I got and I don't like the fact that the cats aren't fixed but ultimately they're my husband's babies and he's just not comfortable with it.

There are several members on here who work in rescue, and would be very open to discussing with you any questions you may have. If you look at the signature line of each post, you will often see something like : support YorkieHaven Rescue or something similar. LadyJane is one member who is very very active in rescue.
It's good to wait until after you settle into your new home, cause for sure puppies require a lot of time and attention, and Yorkies sometimes can be hard to housetrain.

I wish you luck in your search and Welcome to YT

Hi – Welcome to YT and congratulations on your decision to be “owned” by a Yorkie. My Bridget was a rescue from an Amish Puppy Mill. I got her when she was 12 weeks old and has been the “light of my life” for the last 6 months.

I think that since she was rescued so young – we didn’t have to deal with any emotional issues that she could have been subjected to if she had lived there longer. The one thing that we are dealing with is the lack of knowledge of exactly what her background is. Which is something you have with a “good breeder”. The initial cost of adoption her was considerably less than I would have spent had I gotten her from a good breeder, but in the long run I believe the final amount will be more. She has been diagnosed with LP grade 2-3, which hopefully won’t need surgery – but we don’t know that. After being a member here for the past few months I’ve learned that a good breeder will stand behind his/her puppies (because he/she has taken all the steps to breed the best possible puppy that he/she can) and if something is found after you bring your new baby home – you have some options. (talk about a run-on sentence!)

I wouldn’t trade Bridget for anything – and no amount of money would be too much to be ensure she lives the best life I can give her…(I have Care Credit…haha – got it the day I picked her up). But it is something to think about when deciding to adopt a rescue. Personally – I would do it again, because I think that those who have had a rough start deserve the best possible life. I am not looking to show, and definitely not breed, which is one of the reasons I chose to rescue – but that is certainly not to say that I wouldn’t in the future purchase from a breeder who felt I was qualified to adopt one of his/her babies. Bridget just came along when I needed her and she needed me…..fate made us a team!

Good luck in your search – you have come to a wonderful place for leaning, caring, and lots of opinions. All are given with a lot of love for a wonderful breed from a lot of parents "owned" by Yorkies!!! (hope this all made sense)

Be sure to know your cats temperment, some don't take to kindly to having an adorable puppy invade their space...Good luck in your search, people on here have a ton of helpful information and I'm sure they'll help you out!

We bought our first dog from a breeder on the internet- we have been paying for that mistake for 9 years.(we love our Lucy but she's not healthy)
Last summer my son and I visited quite a few local"breeders".we learned a lot, the best being to say "no, thank you."
Once we saw our Ziva and where she was raised and the difference in the dogs we knew it was right. When my vet asked where we got her (impressed) he said the problem is most people aren't able to say no to a puppy.I'd say look until its right and be willing to wait.

OMG - that is sooo true.....I have 3 cats and the one I thought would have the hardest time adjusting took to her like she'd been raised with her - the one I thought would have the least trouble adjusting stayed in his condo for nearly 6 weeks and only come out to eat/potty/ and hiss at the new addition! My middle cat - (22 lb Maine Coon) just doesn't bother with her nor she with him. But they now all get along...my cats have come to realize that Bridget is the "Ruler of the Roost" what's hers is hers and what's theirs is hers!!!

Default Rescue

Why are you not interested in rescuing a Yorkie?

There are hundreds of Yorkie's needing forever homes..........

Don't add to the pet overpopulation by buying one from a breeder.

Where did she say she's not interested in a rescue?

Hey, I'm all for getting one from a rescue and not buying from byb's/petstores but why do so many of you think that it's your place to tell people to get a rescue? They're NOT for everyone!!! God Bless the people who do get them but don't make others feel bad if they don't or can't!

I totally agree. When I came here to learn about yorkies before buying, seemed like everyone was shoving rescue down my throat. It got very annoying. Don't get me wrong, I am all for rescue! However, no rescues around me would let me because I had two children under 10 yrs at that time. Anyway.....

OP....be patient....you will find your baby! Good luck!
