Hi – Welcome to YT and congratulations on your decision to be “owned” by a Yorkie. My Bridget was a rescue from an Amish Puppy Mill. I got her when she was 12 weeks old and has been the “light of my life” for the last 6 months. I think that since she was rescued so young – we didn’t have to deal with any emotional issues that she could have been subjected to if she had lived there longer. The one thing that we are dealing with is the lack of knowledge of exactly what her background is. Which is something you have with a “good breeder”. The initial cost of adoption her was considerably less than I would have spent had I gotten her from a good breeder, but in the long run I believe the final amount will be more. She has been diagnosed with LP grade 2-3, which hopefully won’t need surgery – but we don’t know that. After being a member here for the past few months I’ve learned that a good breeder will stand behind his/her puppies (because he/she has taken all the steps to breed the best possible puppy that he/she can) and if something is found after you bring your new baby home – you have some options. (talk about a run-on sentence!) I wouldn’t trade Bridget for anything – and no amount of money would be too much to be ensure she lives the best life I can give her…(I have Care Credit…haha – got it the day I picked her up). But it is something to think about when deciding to adopt a rescue. Personally – I would do it again, because I think that those who have had a rough start deserve the best possible life. I am not looking to show, and definitely not breed, which is one of the reasons I chose to rescue – but that is certainly not to say that I wouldn’t in the future purchase from a breeder who felt I was qualified to adopt one of his/her babies. Bridget just came along when I needed her and she needed me…..fate made us a team! Good luck in your search – you have come to a wonderful place for leaning, caring, and lots of opinions. All are given with a lot of love for a wonderful breed from a lot of parents "owned" by Yorkies!!! (hope this all made sense) |
