Default I just want to say...

I now fully understand WHY you should choose a reputable breeder & WHY breeders should keep puppies until they are at least 12 weeks old. I knew that was what was recommended, knew the reasons behind that way of thinking, but never really fully "got it". After bringing home LuLu, I get it now. I've brought home 6 week old pups from BYB in my lifetime (not yorkies) & they were always scared, and didn't adjust well for weeks or months. But my LuLu hasn't missed a beat since coming home at 14 weeks. She isn't timid or shy, isn't scared at all, & hasn't cried at night...she has adjusted much better than I could have ever dreamed!

I know some of this could just be due to her personality, but I fully believe the way she was raised & the fact that she was allowed to stay with mom & littermates so long really prepared her for coming home to us. I couldn't be happier with how she's transitioned & how well behaved she is. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful baby girl.

Just wanted to thank YT for helping me with my research.

It feels so good when someone "gets it"!

Aww congratulations!! I totally get it now too since I took my pup home at 9 weeks and we are dealing with biting issues which could have been resolved had he stayed with his mother and litter mates another few weeks. He's doing better though now that he's being socialized in puppy kindergarden

Just a question to the OP. A lot of people who get their babies earlier say it's so that they can bond. Do you feel as though you and Lulu aren't bonded?

I absolutely feel as though LuLu and I have bonded...even my DH comments on how she already knows who her "mommy" is. She already loves to cuddle with me & if I'm laying down or sitting on the couch, she wants to be with me. I don't see how getting her at 14 weeks verses 6 or 8 weeks has hindered our bonding at all. And it's made for a much more pleasant transition time for all of us.

Thank you for responding. I know it sounds silly, but for others that may be reading that is valuable information. Kaji came home at 12 months and he definitely knows who his mommy is. He'll squeal if he's not near me.

Nope, doesn't sound silly at all. I had come across that response during my research. Honestly, it never crossed my mind that she and I wouldn't bond properly. I was more focused on doing what was right for her...it worked out beautifully.

Very good point....too many times a person puts "their" priorities above the puppy.....do what is right for the puppy first!

I don't know I have been breeding ONLY yorkies for a long long time and I really think it is about each individual puppy than a set age. I have puppies that do not like to be in a litter at all. They cannot stand the other puppies biting and jumping at them. They will try and hide to get away. When I take them out away from the other puppies their true personality comes out. They are so much happier! Than I have others that want to stay with the litter and Mommy and aren't in any hurry to wean off the nipple till they are 10+ weeks old. Poor Mommy is running for dear life! So, I think it is nice to have a set average age but it is nicer to know your babies and make sure they are ready for the transition and help them make it as smoothly as possible. With all that said I could not imagine anyone letting a puppy leave its Mom before the age of 8 weeks at the very earliest.

I know someone who got a "cheap" yorkie cuz she didnt think they were worth paying for. The breeder made her take the pup a few days shy of 6 weeks. I warned her over and over and told her WHY that wasnt a good idea. She didnt listen.....

This pup is now 4 months old and is INSANE. This dog wont stop biting. I went to see it..picked it up and i couldnt get it to calm down at all. I couldnt even hold it because it was too active and biting me. It wont stop biting and she's talking about rehoming the pup All that does is pass the buck off to someone else. (ya get what ya pay for) The pup wont potty train, but has free-run of the house too.

I've offered advice and it gets ignored.....its a shame

That is why we really need to get these laws changed. Anyone that buys an ACA or CKC dog is asking for trouble from the beginning. There is only 1 dog standard in this country The American Kennel Club if someone tells you they have some other type of papers for that dog than it is not really a true breed and you are helping and aiding in the abuse of animals. All those dogs started out from a Puppy mill weather the person selling them is or not. They are breeding a poor quality dog trying to get money for it as quickly as possible than on to the next. They probably had the dogs in cages, yanked it out sold it to your friend and the puppy was never properly socialized or cared for from the beginning. ReRe in the making they get even more crazier when people do the crate training routine. How does a brain and bones develop if it is in a cage doing nothing but looking pitiful. So sad!

My grandma held longer her Great Danes ... never sent them home at 8 weeks.. always about 10 . So i believe even for larger breeds it is nicer to have them at the breeders longer than 8 weeks !

Great post !

I have 10 week old pups so I would like to tell you just how wonderful nature is if we just look and let nature dictate when what should happen.

I normally give them a little warm puppy milk first thing in the morning because it is so cold here at the moment. Well on Tuesday morning they would not drink it just had their kibble and water. Tuesday evening they did not curl up together but found their own little spot in their pen and slept. I put mommy in with them for some play time a couple of times a day and they would follow her and try to suckle, NOT since Wednesday, they preferred my company ...................... and wanted me to play tug-of-war with them. So I believe they are telling me that they are getting ready to go to their new for ever mommies soon, who can not wait for them to come home but I insist they stay until THEY ARE READY not when we want them.
