Dying/Enhancing the show Yorkie

OK, the flat iron just about did me in. That dog must have been Mother Teresa re-incarnated, she had the patience of a saint. I don't have that much patience when I flat iron my hair. Also the top knot, if I tried to trim Ruby's ears that way, she'd be missing both of them!! The videos were certainly educational and entertaining

Chachi, I consider myself a show breeder although I am still a novice but I did give my input on this. I don't think it's right but like I said in my previous post on the other thread it is done just not at the shows. I am sure if it is brought to the attention of the judge at the show they will investigate.

\okay some input from a novice exhibitor. It takes me about 2.5 to three hours to wash, blow dry, oil and wrap Razz's coat. The wrapping is the longest process for me, because I'm still a bit clumsy with it all. I am also a perfectionist, so I wash really throughly, and rinse like crazy, and I usually do two shampoos, and 2 creme rinses as well.

My boy came to me very very good on the grooming table. He stands, sits, or is very quiet when I clip his nails, use the clippers on his feet and ears, and of course all that blow drying and oiling. That is the breeders doing, and also his parents character as well. Ilona before I got him at 14 wks or so, was and had already bathed him x times and clipped nails, trimmed ears etc.

Okay about the dying or enhancing or whatever Pure Paws was doing with their product.

I have never used these products on Razzle or my other show dogs. But I have used spf products and washes that help to product the coat when I swim and hike with my dogs.

Are there some exhibitors who use them? I'm sure, but there is no statistical objective survey which will tell us how many.

Can a judge tell if the dog has been enhanced? Good question, but not sure of the answer. But I have had judges lift up RAzzz's coat on his legs to see just how far the tan goes up. I've had judges lift up the body coat and peer underneath. I have had judges put his coat on the back of his hand. Do you all understand why the judge did that?

I'm sure Donna Mary and Tina know. Perhaps besides what I know to be why, maybe they can tell enhancements that way IDK. Here is what I do know; Leg coat lift; the tan/gold should only extend up to the elbow/stifle. Coat on back of hand; should feel cool to the touch with a pure silk coat. The lifting up of the coat on body could be to see how much if any tummy hairs I trimmed clipped, if none I might have wanted to show a fuller coat. Also they look for the drape and sheen and return to "normal" when they let go.

Do you all know that the tan should be shaded? deeper at roots, and lighter at tips? That the quality of the blue steel is a function of how the light refracts off a true blue coat?

Now I can't endorse "cheating" at all, but I can understand, if at one time or another your Yorkie somehow got sun bleached and you just want to put the coat back to what you know she/he has.

I went to the site (out of curiosity) & pure paws doesn't have it in stock anymore...did they discontinue it or did they sell out? Wonder if they'll restock. Enhancing, dying, restoring color, what ever you might call it...it's not a natural standard state & def a no no in the show ring.

I can understand the flat ironing, in case the coat was wrapped & to smooth out the wave.

Thank you everyone, I love hearing about show grooming. Today I'll be giving baths and thinking how much work goes in when you have a show dog. I can't even imagine mine behaving that well. Other then Max that almost falls asleep when I give him his bath. Maybe that is another trait when you get a dog from a reputable breeder.

Wouldn't you consider using a brightener for white coated dogs pretty much the save this? It seems to me that whitening a coat would also be just dishonest. I've seen plenty of white coat brighteners too. When I was a kid we had a westie and whenever he got a bath with a whitening shampoo he would be several shades lighter. Do Parti owners/breeders use whiteners too?

Whitening shampoos are not dyes. The shampoo is rinsed out. Enhancing shampoos are not the same as enhancers that are not rinsed out.

I know a Champion dog that did lose his ear to grooming with scissors.

This thread very interesting and informative. I believe very wrong to cheat like this. If you yorkie not standard, accept it. No cheat. Despicable.

Also, fun hear about grooming story! Would love see yorkie get groom before show! I going to show next month, cannot wait to watch!!

Well it got me thinking so I did a search and there are a lot of links that talk about using things like Peroxide and Blueing to whiten a coat. It's like going to the salon and saying you want to be a blonde. Those products take the unwanted color out of hair which to me is pretty much the same result. Correct? Maybe I am missing something here? If the desired result it to mask what is not considered desirable then why is there a difference when using Peroxide or Blueing?

Your parti in your avatar is a very pretty white. I would think that to keep that desired white it would take some effort to keep looking so pristine. Correct? What do you use~whitening shampoos or something else?

I do not use bluing shampoo as it will turn them blue if you use it incorrectly, I learned this by using on my white horses.
I bath all my dogs with the same shampoo (Perfect Coat Tea Tree Oil) and I use PEK conditioner. I use Ice on Ice before I blow dry and thats it.

It seems to me that this was just being reflected toward the Yorkie show breeders being cheats but maybe that was because of breed of dog shown in the video. But the color "enhancers" that were mentioned previously pretty much apply to all show breeds since the colors or dogs are pretty much gold, black, brown and white. It just seems like a few of the posts were directed toward this type of cheat being used ONLY by Yorkie breeders but I would bet that product is also used by other breeds as well. Like I said previously about the peroxide that I saw talked about with the white coated breeds? Would you not agree that there are those that use this to achieve the pure white to the coat? I understand this is YT and this is "our" breed but I'm just saying...........

I pretty much see these types of "cheats" as being comparable to athletes that use steroids. It happens and some are caught and others are not~ then there are those that will claim ignorance as well.

One is a shampoo and the other is a dye...two totally different products. One helps to wash away dirt and the other is to darken a coat to hopefully win in a dog show.

Two different products with two different intentions.
