What does it sound like to you? Why would the average pet owner NEED to make a dog look like it had their testicles? Better yet, why would you need to make it appear that your dog didn't have distended testes ie cryptorchid or monorchid?

LOL yup heard of them, and in yorkies of course you get to try to improve ear set by taking an ever so small piece of ear hair into the topknot to make ears stand up.

There are probably dental implants too.

Oh yes and how about surgically cutting tendon on dogs tail to insure that happy "erect" tail carriage.

Much more concerning (to me) is how handlers can and do exhibit the dog a certain way to cover up poor fronts rears, toplines etc.
Then there are the "tricks" handlers play to distract your dog or somehow put your dog at a disadvantage.

Now having said this, there are many many people in the show world, who do a whole lot of good and compete ethically. It is a competition, after all. Part of your responsibility is to train your dog to ignore treats that have been left on the floor, your responsibility to stack your dog in the most appealing way for his/her structure, your responsibility to make sure you don't get "buried" in the stacking set up. Your responsibility if an exhibitor is running to close up your tailbutt, to take evasive tactics, and or tell them to back off. This not so much in the toybreeds, but let me tell you it happens a lot in the working breeds. And this can be a very dangerous practice.

Let me tell just one teeny story. At a show couple months back, a pro handler I know was standing ringside (at the time I didn't know he would be showing a yorkie), so he has a small crate ringside on the floor. I'm waiting to go back in for judging of winners dog, he lets his small dog(not a Yorkie) out of crate, it somehow slips past him, and comes up to play with Razzle not once but twice!. Razz of course is nice and distracted by now. We get called back into the ring, we progress and win. Guess who shows up in BOB competition but that self same handler with a Yorkie. Was it an accident? hummm. perhaps

I think it goes without saying that just because some people do unethical things to win in the ring , does not mean that everyone does it or condones it. There are always going to be people who find the loopholes and ways to get around rules, standards and regulations in order to come out on top, regardless of whether it's right or wrong.

I don't see how anyone even has a chance of winning if they play by the rules.

I belonged to a local kennel club at one time and I heard lot of stories. I decided at that time that showing was not for me. It would be way too stressful and totally NOT fun.

There are many many products out there that can give volumne body to a dogs coat, mitigate a cotton coat so that it appears more silk like, color washes, color enhancers, dyes, the list is almost endless. In terrier breeds they have shampoos to help keep the correct wirey texture, they have products to put into the coat to help that as you blowdry,etc.

Did you know that ironing the coat if done often enough can turn a coat brown? That sun can bleach out colour on a coat?

So hypothetically speaking if your dog has the true colored coat and you were camping and hiking and spending time out in the sun with your pups, their coats got sundamaged, and you had to show them, would it then be wrong to color the coat? Would you be unethical then?

Believe you me there are worse things done then dying a coat.

Hmm that very interesting point. Never thought of that way. I guess one of those thing you take on case to case base, yes?
