| ![]() i personally wouldn't pay $300 for an accident pup that seems a bit too pricey and i feel like they should be giving them away and not making money on them, however, i'm happy for you and wish you the best of luck with your new puppy. if you need any advice on raising him please just ask away. |

| ![]() Thanks guys for all your messages & help! I am so excited & nervous about bring him home! He is going to be loved lots. This forum & it's members has already been a great help to me. £300 was the best price I have found for a pup with all it's vaccinations etc. My puppy was the last left & seems to have been really cared for. The other pups were sold to friends of theirs & the guy's wife wouldn't let her keep this one as they would have 4 all together then haha. I'll be sure to post pictures of the little guy! |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | ![]() Hi Sarah Here in the UK the legal age to take a pup home is 8 weeks old, but I understand it is 12 weeks in the USA. It is not uncommon for puppies to go home at 6 weeks here in the UK but I would recommend that if they can, they should stay with their mom till 8 weeks. My pup is 8 weeks old today and I took her home at 6 weeks. At the moment she is bites a lot because he teeth have been coming through but she bites hard and hurts you, This I will have to teach her is wrong. If she had stayed with her mom and litter mates till 8 weeks she would have learned how hard is acceptable to bite from the rest of the litter and her mom. She didnt have any health issues but it is very scary to take them home so small and its a whole lot of worry. In the UK as soon as they start eating dog food instead of feeding from their mom they usually go to their new homes, but like I said the reason why they should stay till 8 weeks is not because of food it's because they learn an awful lot from the rest of the litter and there mom in those couple of weeks. If you do take her at 6 weeks make sure you have a vet check her over. She will need to be wormed at 6 weeks and again a couple of weeks later (should tell you when and how on the box of worming syrup/tablets). She will also need her first needle between 6-8 weeks and her next a few weeks after. Let us know how you get on and feel free to contact me if you want any more info on having a younger pup. Good luck ![]()

| ![]() Hi Rachael ![]() I decided not to opt for that breeder as they were quite suspect. Wouldn't let me see the father etc, also from advice I recieved on here it didn't sound like the best option. Instead I opted for another breeder, who cost £50 more (£300), but seems much more professional & caring about the pup. He is 12 weeks old, so as you say, the legal US age to take home. He also has all the vaccinations so I ended up saving on that (as a student this was good news!) hopefully I shall be taking a happy, healthy puppy home this coming Sunday ![]() |

| ![]() Legal age in USA is 8 weeks but most good breeders will keep there babies until they are 10 to 12 weeks depending on the size and some longer if they are sell a good quality show dog..I got both of my girls when they were 10 weeks. Good luck with your new baby, can't wait to see pictures of him ![]()

i do not agree with buying from a petstore no matter what and i do not agree with buying from a backyard breeder or puppy mill. in my post i did say that i would never pay 300 for an "accident" by which i meant that this was prob. not the best place or way in which to find a new puppy. however i was trying to be nice and wish her luck with the new baby anyways because she does have him now and will need lots of love and advice from us. just because they aren't a reputable breeder doesn't mean they aren't trying to turn a bad situation around. lots of people have accidently puppy births and then they realize what they did and they fix their pups and it doesn't happen again. i'm impressed that this family kept the pup to 12 weeks and had it vaccinated before selling it off to someone when they couldn't keep it....it's a heck of a lot better than the other person that wanted to sell it at 6 weeks old and wouldn't allow the person to see the father and stuff. i say good for you, you stayed away from the BYB and found someone that needed to give a puppy a good home. 300 is kinda high for an accident, but at least they kept the pup to 12 weeks and seem to be doing their best with the situation.

![]() heartworm disease is deadly, dangerous and it's a lot more expensive to treat than it is to prevent. it's around 700 or so to treat at our clinic and only about 40-70 a year for prevention depending on the type you buy. good luck with new pup.

![]() The rabies shot should NOT be given along with other vaccinations. As for spay/neuter, some do have it done early but I would never consider surgery on such a young dog. My goodness, their organs don't fully develop until 5 months old. Plus, the growth plates are still open and the sex hormones play a part in the pup's growth. As for heartworm preventatives, it is not recommended to begin them until 5 months old. All the vets I know will do a test before starting a pup on them and then re-test yearly...not waiting for the year to lapse before testing. It has to do with product warranty and also the fact that not all heartworm preventatives can be given to a dog that tests positive. Also, in another post, someone posted about the minimum legal age to sell a pup in the U.S.. There is a minimum legal age (8 weeks) but only in 17 states, from the last time I checked. All other states have no such requirement.

| ![]() sorry about that. i didn't mean to do rabies and the last distemper and neuter all in one day. our vet does the rabies and neuter on the same day for most dogs...but i personally do not recommend that. i prefer to have the rabies done on a day all alone so they can rest and fully take that one on...and a neuter i believe the proper age for a yorkie is no earlier than 6 months. wait until their baby teeth are falling out and they are almost done loosing them and you should be right around the time to spay/neuter. i wouldn't personally wait until after their first heat due to the amount of risk for cancers that increases with even one heat before a spay for a female. males i wouldn't wait too long on either depending on their size because of marking/humping habits that will develop with age. also with heartworm prevention. that is about 100% what our vets do here. i meant to say it the same way that you did. start prevention but test yearly. we usually do not do a heartworm test until 1 year old, but we always test every year after that and we make sure there are no heartworms present before allowing a pill to be taken. i do believe they start them on heartworm prevention around 5 months, but i don't think we require a test until a year old. i don't know why that is. sorry to be unclear with how i phrased that.
